Labor wise, I would rather do this myself, if it lasts me another 50k till the shaft has to get done, does not really matter to me then worth the delay.

I am in new england things rust and get bound up, so this is the short term solution.

Thanks.
Totally worth it to go the EPS route. I have 25k on my replacement and no wiggle at all. It took me 90 mins to install and now I could do it in 30-45. Most of the time is spent removing the old rubber from the bearing.

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks, good to hear a few years later people are happy.

Any of you guys turbos?

Wondering if the extra load makes a difference. Was diagnosing a whole car vibration at around 60MPH and a once in a while whine and found this problem.

Mine's in a turbo. I was a little worried about hi speeds at first, but have two years and 30K at autobahn speeds averaging 110mph with hour and a half long sustained peaks of 130-150 mph. I don't worry about the eps unit anymore. The bearing yes, but not the eps unit.

Thanks, yeah unfortunately it appears my bearing is shot, so I am going to have to replace with the rebuilt vertex unit. Seems to be the most respected rebuilt unit.

My rubber is all intact with some age cracks and the whine, when it makes it sounds like a fan bearing going when I let off the gas.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I wonder why I got the luck on this one being the one in a million bad bearing.

On an, 09 957 TTS that only has 30,000 miles, will upgrading any of these parts now to an aftermarket solution (Vertex support, CF or aluminum cardan shaft, etc) permanently eliminate a future problem or save me from having to replace more parts once a failure occurs?

Thanks.

Just put some zip ties and some 3/8" hose in the back and do the Jimi Fix. You'll be fine.

Do this preemptively or after the rubber center disintegrates the first time?

Default Ordered this morjing

Heard the vibrations yesterday morning under hard acceleration . Put truck on lift to make sure cardan issue. Yes. Orderer EPS and parking truck until part comes on Tuesday. Seems pretty simple. At 85k miles I'm not doing the bearing, just the support. I'll write back only if problems installing myself or product. D

Done. Couple thoughts. Took me 4 hours. Twice everyone else, but I'm pretty cautious and did not have all the right tools. Of note...You cannot use the standard jack to lift the vehicle and place on jack stands. The lifting and jackstand points are too close. There's a bulletin from Porsche about this. So I had to get a 3 ton floor jack. I had to improvise wheel chocks to insure the car didn't roll with the rear (only) up. The biggest issue for me was hack sawing through the factory support. VERY tough given the angle, and the limited space for sawing motion. Not the right tool. Everything else was dead simple.

Just a heads up - you do know most hacksaw frames allow rotating the blade at 90 degree intervals? For something like the factory support, I'd be looking at disconnecting the hacksaw blade at the forward end of the frame, turning it so it faces the frame of the saw, and putting it through the inside of the support.

That way you can use gravity to help you out, and have the hacksaw frame mostly out of the way when sawing.

Just a thought..

does the round donut HAVE to be installed or can just the bearing support be installed?
the reason i ask is because we only installed bearing support and all was good. now, i have a low speed "drumming"/"humming " sound that begins from a standstill and disappears around 30 mph.
all thoughts appreciated,
ed

I just did the bearing support (and repacked the bearing) and have the guibo rubber doughnut thing on the shelf still. 5k miles later no issues for me.
