Post Off road comparision with RR

Here is a comparison of the off road capabilities of the Cayenne and the
new Range Rover. Pay $20k+ more and get less, much less.

Range Rover Cayenne S Cayenne Turbo

Approach angle 32 29.1 32.4
Departure angle 29 25.7 27.3
Ramp over angle 28 20.4 24.7
Clearance 11.1 7.6" 9.8"
Wading depth 20"* 19.685" 21.85"

A funny thing is that Cruise Control is an option on the Cayenne S, looks like
buyers are going to get nickle and dimed for everything.

*If I recall correctly, I'll get the numbers from the book tonight. The RR can go much
deeper, only you are asked to put a plastic sheet in front of the radiator to prevent
the engine fan from splashing the motor... oh and you need to keep a bow wave in front
of the vehicle (keep moving) as you wade.

Good information!

My guess is that when you equip the Cayenne S to the same standard as the RR, then the 2 vehicles will we very, very close in price.

Mind you, just a guess but predicted on the fact that Porsche is not stupid. It will be interesting to see how it actually comes out.

The Turbo has many more standard features, air suspension etc.

I tried the Cayenne configurator. You are right, the pricing gets pretty close, except the RR has air suspension and an uprated radio and nav system. Not sure the Cayenne comes with an uprated radio and nav system as stock, but didn't see it as an option either.

The RR is more closely related to the Turbo Cayenne when comparing features, excepting the 2 turbochargers and the HP that they provide.

Since your into the "off-road" arena, with approach angles etc. don't forget to include the the G 500. The king of them all with "tank like" build and 3 (yes 3) locking differentials.

It will go like this, I think:

G 500 off road king
RR all around king
Cayenne on road driving king.

This is based upon traditioal Porsche characteristics and intimate experience with the G 500 and RR. when we get to try out the Cayenne this theory cad be verified or rejected.

Now we're into niches within niches.

I did the comparison and the Cayenne can't compete with the Range Rover. They nickel and dime you to death on the Cayenne, while the Range Rover comes standard with everything (only option is a winter package with heated seats and steering wheel). If you try and option an S so it comes with the same options as the Range Rover, it will cost you over $10k more than the Range Rover. This doesn't take into account what a piece of crap the Bose system is on Porsches (why oh why can't they put in a decent stereo; my 996 TT felt like a giant booming echo chamber with the stock Bose system and I had to spend $5k to replace it).

I decided that the Porsche was not worth the price differential especially when you consider how beautiful the Range Rover is and how unbeautiful/generic the Cayenne is. Hopefully, Porsche will figure it out when they update the first generation Cayenne.

I know the RR is a great vehicle, and costs aroud $73500 loaded.

The Cayenne's base price is $55 or $58K, what options did you add to make the comparison?, list please.

I don't want to judge the Cayenne from the pictures and will draw a conclusion when I see it.

As far as the next generation Cayenne, it should be better. It took since 1970, and BMW, to finally get the RR right.

Come to think of it, 32 years from now I won't care what the Cayenne looks like! I'll be more worried about what I look like!

I think you can start from either direction. The Rover is configured somewhat like the Turbo, with air suspension etc... Everything but the turbo chargers themselves.

wood dash, gps nav onroad and offroad systems, logic 7 stereo (500watt, 15 speaker), air suspension, descent control, traction control, abs, heated steering/seats (all around), air/heat control in rear, xenon lamps, fog lamps f/r, lamp washers, seat/mirror memory keyed to key, alarm, homelink, valet window up and down, unattended car ventilation, leather all around, metalic paint, heated windshield, trip computer, cd-changer, tow package, full size spare, 19" wheels, moon roof, cruise control, auto tranny w/ sport and manual modes, and best of all an analog clock on the dash

I'm sure that I've missed a number of items, but that will get it started.

Try the configurator out at www.porsche.com

I cannot vouch for the US, but in the UK, as far as I know, no schools, gyms or supermarkets have rivers or ditches at the entrance!!??

Wink

I just use it to wade through all the Porsche Hyperbole on how the Cayenne is an appropriate addition to the the model line of a sports car manufacteror. Sometimes I even have to put that little plastic shield in front of my radiator
