Question Coolant Pipe Issues

It looks like the coolant pipes on my 2006 Turbo S are eventually going to be a problem? No leaks yet but it is probably just a matter of time. Is there a kit that is manufactured that is available? I am probably going to do it myself. It does not look that difficult and I have all the tools and shop to do it at. Too bad Porsche does not step up and warranty an obvious defect. My old 97 930 never had the problems the new cars do. Maybe thats why I still have it.

Have you looked at the coolant pipes thread at the top of the forum?

A '97 930?? Could you mean a '87?

There's a kit available with aluminum pipes. I'd recommend changing them before they fail, as failure can lead to a host of other issues.

I don't believe there is a "kit" per se, I think it's just the selection of parts the dealership considers to be the parts that need to be replaced.

2 parts that were NOT included with my parts was the (metal) gasket and rubber gasket for the thermostat housing. I re-used the original parts but if I were to do it over again I would most definitely replace the metal (outer) gasket, the inner rubber one I don't think is as critical.

Yes, the metal gasket is a one-time-use gasket. It should be replaced every time the housing is off. Some people have been successful at replacing the coolant pipes without removing the thermostat housing, but I've found it much easier to replace the pipes if the housing is off. The part number for the metal gasket is 948.106.123.03 and the rubber sealing ring is 948.106.401.01

I called my local Porsche dealer yesterday and asked them how many Cayennes they have seen with coolant pipe issues. The service advisor told me it war rare and he has only seen it twice and they were high mileage vehicles. Did not recommend replacing them on a pro active basis

I was the Porsche dealer technician in Alaska, and I did 4 or 5 sets of coolant pipes in a year. Most of them were around 70k miles when it happened. If you're planning on driving a long distance, I would absolutely take care of it proactively. It's not something you want to deal with in the middle of nowhere with no notice.

That proves your dealer doesn't sell or service many Cayennes - or is just an outright dishonest dealer. It's not an "IF" - it's a "WHEN"..

There are some T pieces behind the engine near the firewall that should be changed as well. They have a habit of splitting around the same time the coolant pipes split.

The part numbers for the plastic T pieces are: 955 106 323 50 and 948 106 035 51.
They are identified as "water hose" in the PET manual.

Suncoast Porsche sells a kit for $549.95. Here's the text from their website for the Cayenne S kit:

Cayenne V8 Coolant Pipe Upgrade/Repair Kit
Coolant Pipe Repair Kit

This kit replaces plastic pipes with new factory aluminum pipes. The plastic pipes can deteriorate over time, and this has become a must-do project for the V8 models. The new and improved pipes makes this kit a permanent solution, and our handy 17 piece kit makes the swap easy. It's everything you need, it even comes with two gallons of coolant.

Kit includes the following parts:
* Intake Distributor Gasket x 2
* Coolant Pipe
* Bushing x 3
* Hose Clamp x2
* Sealing Ring
* Coolant Hose
* Coolant Neck
* Upper Fastening Bracket
* Lower Fastening Bracket
* Thermostat Housing Gasket
* Coolant Pipe
* Antifreeze x 2
* Vent Line
* o-ring

Just had mine done on my 06 TTS with 79k miles. Once opened up it became evident that they were starting to leak the things would have been a lot worse had I waited. Its a smart mod to do and as far as the class action lawsuit, who knows status of the actions consolidated in federal court?
