Default Plate Screws

What do you guys use that live in cold north with salt etc?

A couple years ago I had them rust solid as they had been in for a few years. Now I am just paranoid. Don't want that to happen again.

Solutions?

There are stainless steel philips-head screws available for the license plate however, they'll only be as good as the zinc-plated rivet nuts that they screw into.

No issues with the Cayenne to date however the same cannot be said for my son's '03 VW Jetta which seem to have had some sort of galvanic reaction with the dissimilar metals and the road salt spray. The nuts were so badly rusted that I had to re-tap them and coat them with wheel bearing grease.

Ok, now I feel a litte better. I had this problem with the rear plate on our 2001 Jetta. Guess it was not just me.

Plastic screws! Then top them off with a finisher, I use them on all my cars.

Not necessarily. American cars use sheet metal screws and nylon snap-in nuts. The Germans use a metric machine screw with a threaded insert. Your best bet is to visit a store like Fastenal which can sell you a replacement; although you may have to buy a bag of 50 or so.

Just put a dab of Permatex Anti Seize on the screw before you install it.

A good hardware store will carry the 5-6mm(I forget which) screws in stainless or plastic. I test fit mine at my local store - got the right size - then the proprietor told me the right size. I think $1 exchanged hands. Painless. Like the idea of grease.

I just switched mine. I will have to look at see which ones. I went to Menards and bought them. Under 5 bucks. Definitely still look new after the the Chicago salt this year.
