Ok, after sanding, and the paint I used (rustoleum 2x matte black), paint could be handled but was tacky still, directions recommend spraying again after 1 hour, otherwise you have to wait for 48, I didn't want to do that so I sanded. Since this won't be a gloss finish, I was not worried.
I did 3 new coats, 2 min between coats, this is after it was sanded.
This piece on my 08 GTS was worn fron previous owner. It was like that when I bought it from dealer. Ordered a new piece from Suncoast. Used trim removal tools from Amazon and pried off old piece. wasn't worried about tabs since I was replacing anyway. There were no metal clips and only 1 or 2 plastic tabs broke off from the trim. New piece just "snaps" in. Sounds like it might be different than pre-08 models...not sure.
Gonna wait 24 or so hours till I put it back together, but gives you and idea what the final look will be. It's darker in real life. Currently just sitting on there as I want the paint to cure.
Has been clear coated, 2x with 3x mini coats every 2 min.
Will post pics of it all back on the car in a day or so.

I had only 2 metal clips, one on each end, other have none, some have more.
I pulled the bumper tabs to release the trim, not the trim side. The trim appears to be fiber glass of some sort.
That definitely solves the problem of the metal piece coming off. Looks good with the trim on your doors. Nice job.
Thanks, I am curious to see how well it holds up over the winter, etc. After seeing plenty of white jeeps, mercs and other cars with black trim and a black scuff guard back there, I decided it shouldn't look too bad.
