Looking for Radar / Laser Detector
#16
Unfortunately, it looks like a hard-wire option won't be available for several months; also it will rely on having a lot of Escort/Bel owners, with smart phones (i.e. iPhones or Androids), who are willing to buy the enhanced Smart Cord, for it to really work. But, if that happens, it could be very useful. Sort of the 21st century version of the CB radio craze back in the day.

A laser detector is not as worthless as many think.
If your detector is mounted properly at the top of your windscreen sometime you will pick up the "scatter" when the cop is trying to detect the speed of another car. Laser gun aiming is not as accurate as you might think when a cop is trying to sit sideways in a car/motorcycle and point the thing out the window. To some extent this is terrain dependent.
Also, and more importantly. Many cops have learned that to make a rock solid case in court they need to take TWO speed readings. If they write down " at 1000 yards speed was 81 mph and at 800 yards speed was 82mph" it shows a much stronger case against you and that they had the right car.
So when you get that very first HIT of the laser, slow down as fast as you can to the speed limit. If the cop gets two different readings that are not in his favor he is most likely going to just wait for the next car. Otherwise he opens himself up to scrutiny for having the wrong car, changing his normal method of operation in front of the judge and attorneys that know him etc.
Fwiw, I am very happy with my V1.If you take the time to learn it and set it up properly for your area and your car, mute switch in turn signal stalk, programming , etc. Then it is actually very quiet.
Laser diffusers/jammers are becoming illegal in more and more states.

Laser scatter saves are very rare. From my personal experience and those of many friends of mine who have laser jammers and radar detectors, laser scatter saves only happen one out of every 25 laser encounters.
If you want to protect yourself, buy a Laser Interceptor Laser Jammer.
There is a lot of information on this site about laser jammers and radar detectors www.radardetectorforum.org

Interesting that laser jammers are illegal in your state and mine, but detectors are ok. I wonder if the legal distinction is between a passive device that allows you to know when you are under surveillance as opposed to one that actively interferes with law enforcement?

I wonder how a jammer works if the beam is so small? Wouldn't you have to have the jammer placed where the beam is (hopefully) going to be hitting?

Technically a "radar locator" or "radar detector" can be used to detect things other than Th Police. ( like if you wanted to know we ich stores use k band door openers)
The jammers interfer directly with law enforcement. To be effective they are typically mounted right by/on the license plate. Which also makes them easy for cops to find when they stop you.
I'm surprised at how many I see here in Colorado bolted onto cars with Colorado plates. They are so obvious when you know what you are looking for.
There are some systems out there that double as "parking sensors" in an attempt to disguise their true nature.

I have heard that in Oklahoma (where jammers are illegal) that if you are stopped with one on your car, the police can impound your car until it is removed.
I can tell you from personal experience that, if you are lased at close enough range at the front bumper, the laser detector won't even go off because the beam is so narrow.

I believe Laser scramblers/Jammers are legal, only radar jammers are illegal due to the FCC as you are broadcasting a regulated radio frequency without a license whereas a Laser Jammer/Scrambler is just sending out a light signal.

Read your state statutes carefully. Here is one for Colorado.

"Radar jamming device" includes but is not limited to devices commonly referred to as "jammers" or "scramblers".
(b) For purposes of this section, "radar jamming device" shall not include equipment that is legal under FCC regulations, such as a citizens' band radio, ham radio, or any other similar electronic equipment.

FYI (from RadarBusters.com):
Radar Detectors are illegal in Virginia, Washington D.C. and on military bases. They are also illegal in commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs, and in several Canadian provinces.
Laser Jammers (shifters) are illegal in Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.
