I have yet to get a return wave from a Cayenne in my 5 years of 996 ownership. What others have said is true, the older the Porsche, the more likely they are to wave.
I have a female coworker who recently acquired a Cayenne and I explained to her that it was very important that she wave to all the other Porsches on the road. She thought this behavior was a bit adolescent but she agreed to go along for the good of the marque. She has consistently reported back that not a single driver has returned her salute to date. The final straw was the day she passed me while waving furiously and I apparently didn't see her and therefore didn't wave back either!
