Default OK, I think I know the problem now....

Took it out this morning to see if by chance the issue went away. (wishful thinking).

So the clunking is coming from right under the armrest console, which means a cardan shaft/driveshaft issue.

Questions:

(a) I went to the vertex site. What's the difference between driveshaft and cardan shaft, and how do I know which I need.

(b) There's a VW dealer a mile from my house, and the P dealer is an hour away/aka flat bed. Can the VW folks do it?

(c) If I do go the P dealer route, cost? Will they use a rebuilt?

Regards

Steve

The Cardan shaft and drive shaft should be the same thing.
The dealer will likely use a new part as it will come with a 2-yr warranty and *should* be hassle-free.

The VW dealer should be able to fix the shaft for you as they layout is identical to a T'reg.

Just called the VW dealer. He said they "only work on VW." Weird huh? I wonder if my local indy can do it? It's just such a hassle to have the thing flat bedded an hour away and then have to get down there to pick it up again....

Oh I meant to ask, even with 100K miles, any wild chance these were covered under a TSB of some kind?

That would be a ZERO chance of any warranty coverage.
Not a hard job, any good indy can fix.

There is an excellent thread on fixing the cardan shaft here. If your indy is willing, he can fix it for $60 worth of parts and not much more labor than a straight swap, versus $550 to $600 for a reman. If mine ever goes, that's the conversation I'm going to have.

Thanks. Which of these parts should I order? Do I need that other piece as well, the flexdisc?

From all reports the shafts are the same on the VW -- they are listed as being the same.

The dealers only use a new Porsche unit - and I'm not sure it has changed !

Not sure I would spend the money to flatbed it to a Porsche dealer - I would stop in to the VW dealer and talk to them.

If you do a search you will see some do the bearing replacement themselves using the $70.00 part from Rockauto. I'm not sure I would it myself -- but it looks straight forward for a competent mechanic.

Vertex says they have upgraded the part -- give them a call!

Thanks guys. I'm waiting for a call back from both my local indy and the P dealer. The question will be whether P has the parts in stock. If so that may make a difference. The Vertex one is $389, plus a $150 core, plus $150+ to ship it priority mail, which will leave me without a car for at least 4 days....

By the way, any chance I've got the diagnosis wrong? I don't think so, but before I order... etc.

It's described as a 'wummering' sound at idle: https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-...ibrations.html

I'm not sure I know what a wummer sounds like :-)
The car sounds just fine at idle though...it's only under acceleration that it feels like it's coming apart from under the console....

The indy just called back. He said an hour at 95.00

How good is the indy -- The part from Rockauto could be at your door tomorrow.

Do you have to take out the exhaust to do the job -- I think the thread with the nice pictures had the exhaust out!

I don't see anything at the Rockauto site for my year.

The indy just said that there is a front driveshaft, and a rear driveshaft. I'm assuming we're talking about the front one. He said the front is a one hour, but the rear is a four hour. Just want to make sure I don't order the wrong one.
