Sorry to say -- the rear.

Do a search for Cardan Shaft

You will see "cardan shaft DIY .. and other stuff" -- lots of pictures

Also the one from 2004 -- that says something about cardan shaft from germany -- has the picture showing placement in the truck

It's the rear shaft (main one under vehicle if you crawl under it). Sound will be under acceleration of just moving. Both p!gs I owned have had it and symptom was loud wummering (think " wum wum wum") and/or heavy vibration specifically around 45mph. Also driveline clunking especially when coming to stop.

Paid a Porsche dealer $900 on the first one with parts and labor.

Just placed the order. Called a local dealer who wanted $1040 for the part alone. Vertex was $389 +shipping +core. Hope that turns out to be what the problem is.

The msrp is only $720 or something like that. Should be less than two hours labor as the one time I waited and it only took 1.5 hrs from arriving to leaving. Amazing what some dealers will try to get away with...

Wouldn't it be funny if it turned out that wasn't the problem at all :-)

Hey All. Thanks to everyone for all the help. Car is back and fixed good as new. Diagnosis of the cardan shaft was 100% correct. Thanks to you guys, I ordered the shaft from vertex for $380, as opposed to the 1050.00 the PD quoted. Total labor was about $350.00.

All in all a happy story.

You guys are awesome. Thanks again.

Steve

I'm not sure I would have picked up a Cayenne if it wasn't for the wealth of information and experience on this board. I certainly wouldn't know as much - especially about what can go wrong!
