Question Is this an S or "just" a turbo? Beats Me!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=200502080579

Greetings Folks,

Long time 911 and 944 owner is now in the market for a Cayenne Turbo (S preferred). I am looking at the car linked above later today (Friday) but given my very basic research this seems like an S badge on a regular turbo. It is a 2005, and I thought the S started in 2006 - is that correct? And doesn't the S have metal inter-cooler piping while the standard turbo makes do with plastic?

I really don't much about these guys, I just started looking this week. Any and all advice on what to look for and how to easily tell them apart would be appreciated! The market seems down, down, down for these - so I figure it might be a good time. Plus, this is my wife' idea

Thank you!!!

Chris

Yes, Turbo S is only available in 2006. But I can't tell them apart, Turbo vs Turbo S. Although the Turbo S is supposed to have bigger brakes, both have red calipers. The non-turbo V8 has silver calipers and the V6 has black calipers. And both non-turbos have different front ends.

Other than the usual maintenance history/record, make sure it has the "updated coolant pipe" and I think "cardan shaft" is common to go around this mileage. Also, these things are supposed to be hard on brakes and tires, given the horsepower and weights. I think average life is around 20k, maybe even less on turbos.

I am sure others will chime in shortly...

If it's the real thing, then Porsche's got a lot to learn about centering the badge! dave

[yes, it's an 'S' stuck on a reg turbo]

+1 ; Unless of course the owner had the tailgate re-painted at one point and the repair shop misaligned the badges

I've enclosed a pic of a turbo-S tailgate found on the net. The 'S' on the eBay pepper is not the same color as the rest of the script. I smell a fish.....

For an extra 10-15k you can upgrade your turbo to a turbo S. PCNA sent all turbo owners an "S" in the mail prompting us to do the upgrade. This owner may have just put that "S" on his vehicle. You could check with the dealer who does his maintenance to see if the upgrade was done or not.

Thanks guys. I usually find this re-badging offensive

Other than that little plastic bit, if this car could be bought for $33K without the 22' wheels, does it seem a fair value in today's market?

Just some info to aid your future shopping.

2006 was the only official year of the pre-facelift "Turbo S".

Before that you could order a "E81 power kit" option, which later became the Turbo S.

If the car is an E81 car it should have "E81" as one of the option codes on the sticker in the upper left hand corner of the spare tire well. It would be worth taking a cell phone picture of this options list anyway and run the codes to see what the car really came with.

The difference between a "Turbo" and a "Turbo S/E81" is:

-bigger front brakes
-bigger intercoolers
-different lower control arm bushings
-different tie rod
-different lowering module programing
-different ECU programming

Email the VIN to Suncoast Porsche (and their free VIN decoding service) and they will return via email a complete options listing and breakdown for the vehicle...then you will know for sure.

http://www.suncoastparts.com/category/VINDECODER.html

The other way is to purchase a CoA from PCNA, but that costs about $100 or so.

Perhaps they don't offer the service for Cayennes , only proper Porsches.

That's the first I've heard of them not responding. They are busy and do this as a courtesy, so it usually takes a few days to a week to hear back.

That explains why I never heard back on the 996.

I took a look at this CTT today. Super Duper Clean other than the Navi screen. Really nice. The owner's have three CTTs, one of which is a full on Gemballa. This is in addition to a 94 speedster and lots of other fun cars. So the car was well taken car of as "Mom's car." Rear bumper cover was replaced, otherwise paintwork free. A bumper to bumper warranty with about 7 months remaining (not-CPO but purchased at the P-car dealer) is still in effect.

I have attached the options sticker, but have not decoded it.

I did not like the 22" wheels, but they are being replaced with perfect condition stock 20" with tires worn about 50%.

So what is the right number for this to be purchased?

Some things don't add up here. They say it is a one owner car but it went through the auction in April 2009 and has been Titled 3 times. Also, heavy useage in the last year; 20K miles since Aug 2009.
