spec is 1.5QT/1000 km..

the diff between max full and min full is 1QT so if you burn a qt then will be at bottom level, add .75 QT and run the oil level check in PCM... then if still low add the rest, doesnt need to be topped up but needs to be above the min and below the max...

i would say always keep a qt in the car in the back... cant hurt.... takes 1 min to check/add/check/add... if you break the car in improperly then the car will burn more.

Oil display is working now, so with the oil at max level I took the car for a 270 miles drive including some heavy traffic and it averaged an unexpected 19.8 mpg, but the oil gauge is now down to half!!
So about 500 miles per quart ? thats crazy, my older cayenne S and even my heavily modded 997 TT never consumed this much oil.
Asking the dealer is probably useless as it seems within "normal". I am carrying oil in the trunk now and ordered a case of Mobil 1....

What do the inside of the exhaust tips look and feel like?

Have you had someone stand behind during boy a cold and warm start to look at the exhaust?

FWIW, it seems as though PAG has increased the oil consumption numbers for the new DFI engines.

IIRC, it was originally 1qt per 1km , like the older engines.

Oil consumption for some of the DFI engines appears to a dirty little secret PAG is uncomfortable with.

AAHT: Keep in mind the part where it says that the engine might use more oil during the break-in period. Se section of the manual above in this post.

I wouldn't worry unless it keeps this up after a proper break-in. Even then it is considered OK for it to use as much as described earlier.

inside of the exhaust tips is filthy black and there was at least one incidence of smoke upon warm start up the day after I got the car. I also saw a hint of grey smoke when i was driving behind the cayenne and my wife downshifted to pass a car but just a small puff.
ill keep an eye on it and on the consumption which should improve with mileage. My 997TT started with a quart every 1000 miles and improved to 1 quart every 2500-3000 miles after a few thousand miles.

I don't enjoy getting under the hood. It's not my cup of tea.

This is so easy, a chick can do it.

Do you go to the dealer to add washer fluid?

Seriously, this thing you find incredibly annoying (going to the dealer) is solved with 2 mins of your own time. It was designed for the owner to put oil in it.

Normally I would recomend filling the oil yourself, it is really easy. But; if the engine has a problem and the car is warrantied, then frequent dealer top-offs could be part of documenting said problem.

This happened to me on my 08 GTS. I have just over 11K on it and have had to put oil in it twice. That does not include the full service that was done at 10K. When if first came on, around 2.5K, I called the dealer whom has one of the best service advisors around. He explained that the Porsche engines, being as high performance as they are, will go through oil during the first couple of years or up to 40K, whichever comes first. I confirmed with him the right oil and I bought a few quarts. Piece of cake to put some in. I know this next part will sound a bit weird but I found spending a bit of time under the hood of my GTS was a real bonding experience.

As an added data point to the thread, I just completed an 1800 mile road trip and now have 2300 miles on my '11 S. The oil gauge is now down to the first mark so my oil consumption is very minimal. Though I have attempted to adhere to the 2k mile break-in procedure (stay under 4,500 rpm), I have hit between 6k and 7k several times (the sport mode likes to hold high revs after letting off the gas and that is going to take me some getting used to! Tips appreciated...).
