I had similar issues so I just installed a current sensing module to automatically switch on the DRL LEDs when the engine is running. Them I set the sensitivity of the side and headlights to the same level - voilà

Could you please recommend a current sensing module and how did you connect it to the LEDs?

Easiest 5 min retrofit ever. Take out old switch. Put in new auto switch. Works!

More information on this subject...
My Cayenne is an '04 S with a 2003 build date. It does have rain sensing wipers.
About 4 years ago I bought an original Porsche switch (made in Spain) off eBay. It didn't work as the lights stayed on in the Auto position in bright daylight. Shelved it and forgot about. Few pages back someone mentioned replacing the sensor with part number 7L0 955 559 A. Found one on eBay for $12 shipped so I figured I'd give it another try.
Installed it yesterday. The A at the end of the part number makes all the difference. Notice my old module on the left has 1 sensor and the new module on the right has 3 sensors.
Auto function now works perfect.
Interesting note...if you install this and it's too dark outside to test it, you'll need a real incandescent light bulb. My garage has very bright overhead fluorescent tube lighting that will not trigger it. Also tried a CFL, LED work light, LED flashlight and even a LED UV light with no luck.

2008 turbo, I replaced my non auto switch (7L5941531B) with an auto switch (7L5941531C) and the rain sensor (7L0 955 559) with a rain/light sensor (7L0 955 559A) didn't work. Changed coding to enable the following:
Byte 04 Bit 0 Assistance Driving Light
Byte 04 Bit 1 Coming-Home
Byte 04 Bit 2 Garage/Cinema Light
Byte 04 Bit 3 Comfort/Tip Blinking
Byte 04 Bit 5 Comfort Interior Lightning
Coding

With light switch in auto lights stay on all the time and registers Fault Found:
01520 - Rain and Light Recognition Sensor (G397)
008 - Implausible Signal
My light switch wiring harness has 9 wires, although the switch has 10 pins, you mentioned attaching another wire into the empty connector and attaching it with one of the control modules in the kick panel, what module is this and where is located?

Switch on order. Going to add VAG-COM to my toolbox of high tech stuff I only understand enough to get into trouble with on my 957 TT. based on what I've read, it sounds like I need to change the rain sensor to rain/light sensor (we'll cross that bridge when I get there, this is a future project) but we'll see how it runs...or doesn't...
