On the first pic, is that the infamous cardan shaft between the transmission and the catalytic converter?

No, that is the front (cardan) drive shaft. I have only replaced 1 before for a torn C/V boot. The rear cardan shaft is what has been going bad(transfer case to rear diff), and it is not the actual shaft that fails, but the center bearing support made of rubber that fails. It simply tears and causes a major vibration/thumping noise, sometimes the bearing will fail and cause very high pitch squeeling noises. But, you cannot purchase just the center bearing/support, so the entire shaft must be replaced, in turn (if customer pay) giving the customer the "shaft".

Hey Jeff, thanks for sharing the pic, you mention a high pitch squeal, I believe I have this problem. It comes on at 15-20 MPH and its definitely speed related as it gets more high pitched the faster I go, it sounds like its coming from the right rear wheel, but it comes to a stop under 15 MPH, could it be a wheel bearing? This sounds like a pricey fix if you can't replace the bearing on the shaft? I have a 04 CS with 48k miles bought new in 10-03.
