Was able to fix this on two different dvd navs with the latest firmware 3.1 by using the piwis tool to do a factory reset, the combo of numbers to press to do a soft reset did not fix it.

I've been an invisible soul just reading posts. Now I find myself asking for your assistance.
I'm a 2004 CS owner and I'm looking to update my NAV to the latest. There are a lot of posts regarding this question but they are all kind of confusing.
My nav reads:
Sw versions
3.0 ...PCM
3.0 ...System Software
6636 Device type
Do I just need to buy the cds from suncoast at $299 and would that lead me to the lateste navigation update possible? or are there any other updates I would need after that.
Can someone point in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

This is probably the wrong thread for this since it is 2.0.
There are 3.5 nav systems for the US market.
From 2003 to 2004 there was the PCM 2.0 hardware version which had a CD based nav unit module plugged in the back of the PCM. The map CDs were read in the PCM itself.
2005 had a PCM 2.1 that looked exactly the same, but it had a DVD drive under the passenger seat that has the nav hardware and reads the map DVDs there.
for MY2006 until I believe MY2009 the PCM 2.1 changed with phone buttons on the front of the unit, with a sim tray as well. Some minor hardware changes were made sometime in the 2005 year which allows MP3 playback from the PCM CD-ROM drive.
In the MY2010 they got the PCM 3.0 which is touch screen.
To make things more confusing the software for the 2.0 goes up to version 3.0 from 1.x and the PCM 2.1 goes to 3.1 from 1.x. Not sure for the touch screen PCM 3.0. Software numbers and hardware numbers have NOTHING to do with each other.
Push main+trip and the top number has the current SOFTWARE version number, not hardware.
Once you upgrade firmware, typically you can not go back to old maps.
So I am pretty sure 3.0 is the highest for your CD based NAV, unless someone retrofitted the DVD one to your car.
I am sure others will correct where I may be wrong.

Ok I am new here so I have to bite. I have an 04 Cayenne S that did not have a navigation disk. I found a 2004 Cayenne disk on Ebay real cheap and ordered it. Now I am thinking it may not work. What does all of this mean. My PCM and software are 3.0 What disk should I have bought, and what is the latest year I can buy that will still work?

with 3.0 you can run the latest 08 discs I don't think there is a minimum year because 3.0 firmware was running with the old discs for a longtime.

When I updated mine, it added much more content. More POIs, more streets, etc. It made my nav system very useful compared to the original discs.
