Default Cayenne GTS vs. BMW M5

I'm coming out of a 2006 BMW M5 SMG and I am considering either an 08 M5 in stick, or a Cayenne GTS in stick. I know there is no comparison between horsepower, the BMW takes cake. But in bad weather, the Cayenne is much more useful than the rear wheel drive M5. Any advice?

Much Appreciated,
Ed

You're right on. Other than losing some straight line performance, the Cayenne GTS will be better suited to daily use, with more luggage space and all weather capability that the M5 can't match.

Ebanzero,

don't mean to hijack, but I'm also looking for a new car and have it narrowed down to an M5 and a GTS.

With the M5 did you have any probs with the SMG, I've heard a lot fo bad things about it and was considering a 6 speed if I don't go for the GTS.

Any advice on the 5?

How can you even compare a sports sedan with an SUV? 2 totally different beasts.

if you go for the M5 only do it in stick. the SMG is awful. very choppy and jerky at medium speeds. The new dual clutch auto from the M3 would be much better, but they are not offering it on the M5 yet. hope this helps.

Driving in S5 eliminates the "choppy and jerk" at medium speeds

Lifting ever so slight between shifts further helps

The M5 will body slam any Cayenne in performance. I guess the SMG is a preference thing, because I just don't have a problem with it. I also never let the car shift for me.

HOWEVER- That all being said, I still miss the Cayenne Turbo like I've never missed a car before. For what it was, the Cayenne did things that SUV's just shouldn't be able to do. I'd pick a Cayenne Turbo over an M5 any day.

that's why I got a second... after looking at all the other SUV's and with PAG fixing most of the alpha/beta issues (my Tit.S has been nearly flawless and bulletproof to date), I got another because I needed a SUV or a large 4DR (that will be hard to go back to). Come on back, the water is warm!

The fact that you are even comparing a 5000 lb SUV to the M5 says it all. There is no all around vehicle on the planet like the CayenneS/GTS/TT

Just got an e mail from Porsche marketing (I think) with a very slick presentation about the Panamera. Like the GTS, it attempts to link-up to Porsche history (just like they did in last year's GTS ad campaign). This is nothing new for Porsche, but it was closer to reality back in the day-- http://www.coochas.com/porsche/Resou...0Evolution.wmv

Re the Panamera, the AWD version won't be out for a couple of years (I'm told).

I sorely want to come back into the fold. I was never a huge participant on this forum or any I suppose, but I do miss my CTT and hence the reason to frequent this forum. I saw an add for Cayenne Ipod integration in one of my monthly car mags and just laughed out loud. Man...the years and hard drive space we spent on that topic.

I just don't have a stable big enough to have a plethora of cars right now. I'm starting to circle in on my next purchase though....wish the CTT made even the least bit of sense for me, but it just doesn't.
