Angry $1600 for a tow hitch

I just contacted the dealer. $1000 for the tow hitch and $600 to put it on. 5 hours of labor. I put one on my X5 and it didn't take me that long. What gives?

Because the rear bumper cover has to come off to mount the hitch.

FWIW BMW wanted $1,200 (including parts) to mount one on our new X5. Bumper has to come off there too (and also a cut out made). I got a copy of the procedure showing only 2.5 (rather than 5) hours necessary and they did it for $1,000 all up. That may be a way to bargain. You could also head over to the local VW dealer and see what they want- I'd bet they're exactly the same parts and level of difficulty.

Thus the nickname "$tealership." You should join renntech.org, and become a contributing member ($25). After which, you can browse to a lot of TSB's (technical service bulletins) and DIY's (do it yourself's) documents.

You located in the tri-state area? I have one in storage that I will see you for cost, which is around $600. Shipping would wipe out the savings, its heavy....

I posted the following well over a year ago:

One of the moderators on this site (Mudman) had an excellent gallery : http://gallery.rennlist.com/cayenneg...udman2?page=1

It is a must see. Because of his gallery, I bought an aftermarket hitch, had it installed by an Independent Porsche mechanic and saved a ton of money. I believe my price out the door was around $700.

Here is the source for the hitch (which is "on sale"): http://www.drophitch.com/index.asp?P...cayenne&Page=1

Fast forward to today: no issues, took the money saved and put it towards a nice new Orbea road bike.

If you're in NO VA go to Intersport or some place similar and have them install it. HBL and the others will simply rape you. The same hitch should work no matter what the year.
