Default Rear Hatch Struts

Can anyone tell me how to replace the rear hatch struts on a 2004 Cayenne?

Is it common for these to wear out this early?

Thanks

The instructions are detailed in the Porsche Workshop manuals. I dont' recall seeing them on Loren's site, but I never specifically looked.

Yes, a known issue on alpha/beta units.

Changing the rear hatch struts is a little more involved than just unbolting them.
I haven't done this yet - but it seems you have to remove some interior trim, cut some sealing compound on the protective cover, then unclip and remove the strut.
Install is the reverse but you are supposed to seal the cover for the strut again and allow 60 minutes of dry time.

If there is enough interest I can post a DIY from the service manual instructions (on my site).

changin the struts isnt hard, taking off the trim is hard becasue its the most fragile plastic ever.
just be sure to support the lid when you pop the struts
one strut will not hold the lid and a falling lid will ruin you day

Definitely support the rear hatch with something. You would be surprised how heavy it is without the gas springs holding it up.

Thanks for the replies Loren, it would be great if you could post something from the manual. And can you point me to your site? Thanks!

You will notice the colder it is - the worse the struts are. During the spring/summer here in Maryland I have no problems - but come winter that damn hatch closes right up on itself.

This seems to be a common problem, so, if you have a good relationship with your dealer, you might talk him into a goodwill replacement, or at least a discount.
