Default VW V10 TDI Vs. Cayenne

I wonder if the V10 TDI will hold it's value better then the Cayenne.

Why wonder when you can look it up?

This isn't something new. They were introduced in the US in 2004. They just pulled US distribution for a few years.

The new 06's have been selling for almost 15k below msrp. The 04's were really holding their value until the first 06 hit the shore.

That makes sense. Limited supply...

If I remember right there was also something about being able to bring a used one into a state (CA and another one) that didn't originally allow the sale of 2004s.

It is an incredible engine.

I just bought a new '07 V10 Touareg a few days ago. What an awesome engine. You can just about pop a wheelie in this thing. I was considering a new '06 Cayenne S Ti edition, but felt that I got a lot more for my money with the VW. For price reference, my car stickered at $70,439. Depending on how the accounting works out in the back room on my '03 ML500 with 53k mi trade, I paid anywhere from $55-58k for the VW. Basically, I was given $33,439 for my ML and discount off of MSRP. Trade in values for the ML ranged from $18-21k. With that info, that eBay buy it now is a little high for a used car with 14k+ mi.

I seriously considered one when I got my '04 CS but wasn't going to pay the same $$ for a VW and the rarity of it back then (and VW service concerns) made me nervous, and the fact the dealer wasn't going to deal much sealed the other deal. It is a great engine and I think the newer one running on ULSD will be much more reliable...

I had a 2005 V10 on order when they stopped importing them. If it had come in, I definitely would have gotten it. It wasn't until I drove a CT that I changed my mind on the Touareg. It's a great engine and SUV, but I thought the Cayenne with PASM was the best handling SUV I had seen. After having a CT, I wouldn't go back. Having said that, paying 55K for a loaded V10 is a great deal. I know that some of the Touareg guys switched to a Cayenne rear sway bar and found a difference in handling. Don't know if it's like a Cayenne, though.

If I could have gotten a TDI back then for $55K I would have gotten it. They were so scarce when I was looking the dealer wasn't dealing much and it was near the same price as a loaded CS...

The dealer that I bought mine from was discounting the '07 TDIs $10k right out of the chute without even asking for it. In fact, they even advertised that in the newspaper. That sold me right there, plus the fact that the local Porsche dealer sold the '06 Cayenne S Ti that my wife and I were considering helped. I believe that most of this money, if not all, was coming direct from VW. BTW, if anybody is interested, this dealer has one more '07 TDI in stock. It stickers at $64k and change and is Off Road Gray in color. Only has option package number one as well as running boards I believe. No option package number two, Nav system, or four zone climate like mine has if I remember correctly. I would think that one could negotiate a deal in the upper $40k's to lower $50k's for that one.

I never did get to drive a Cayenne S. My wife was able to drive one a month ago, the one we considered buying, while I was away in a desert many thousands of miles from here. She really liked it, but didn't feel that it had the punch that our ML 500 did. That hesitation problem? She did say it was a better riding and handling car. Overall, my impression of the VW TDI is that it is also a far superior car than our old ML. Doesn't take much though since that version of the ML first came onto the market in 1997 and didn't change much til '06. Much has changed and improved in the mid size SUV market since then. I feel that this VW is a very solid, nice handling and well made rig. May not have the bling of a Cayenne, but still has the same backbone. And then some with 553 lb/ft o' torque

One issue that worried me a little with the Touareg was the reliability. While the Cayenne had some problems, the Touaregs seemed more frequent and serious. Check out clubtouareg and vwvortex for help.

I saw an awesome Treg at a local dealer..really tricked out...almost bought it...then I drove the Pepper... I just could not see the VW badge next to the Boxster in the stable... Ya pretty shallow, but the Pepper won!

I had an ML-500, briefly. It was fast and probably faster than my Cayenne S. But the Cayenne is light years ahead of the ML's (the older ones) in handling. I felt that the ML was top heavy and leaned in corners. I haven't driven the new ML's so maybe Mercedes has done away with that problem.

I just picked up a new '06 T-Reg TDI V10. All I can say is "wow". This thing is a monster, and actually makes the Carrera S feel it is lacking in power. A super fun drive so far and it is loaded with all the goodies. Besides the deal on the T-Reg would have only put me in a very lightly optioned V6 Cayenne, which although super cool, does not have the wow factor on the accelerator like 550 lb-ft of torque.

There is no substitute for torque....as evidence, please refer to the Audi R10 LMP1 car.
Of course, Dr W. doesn't even allow PAG employees to drive a diesel to work.

Friend got a "Cayenne wanna-bee" and I have to say that the VW beast was pretty nice... with a V10 it would be crazy good for towing.. his power (V8) however is not near that of the Cayenne or the ride. but not a "bad" vehicle..
