Had a flat today, and while guys at the local shop were showing me how completely worn out my pads are I mentioned knock-knock-knocking. Turned out the car was completely out of oil.
Before everyone jumps on me about not checking the oil, I'll go on to admit that I have been naive to follow the manual and what the service department told me: do it when the light comes on or at 20k/40k/etc. So to date, in 33k miles oil has been changed 3 times and with 17k remaining I'll have to start taking better care of the car, though I thought was doing just fine ....

Enigma,
You should have gotten a warning on the dash, starting at when it is a quart low, IIRC. I actually dropped that low, once, and the warning is difficult to miss. I think it will go away for a while if you open the hood, even if you don't add oil, but it comes back pretty quickly, again IIRC. So, if I've been following the threads correctly, it sounds like it is possible that you have not received the appropriate warnings for your brake pads OR for your oil level.

I know I should have gotten the warning. See rome's "What's the damage?" thread re: brakes and as far as why there was no warning light for oil, that remains to be answered later.

Wasn't the CS in service a couple of weeks ago?
I can't imagine what the dealer was looking at
Anyway, go top that bad boy off until you see oil back on the stick and take it in for an oil change.
I think I mentioned this before but someone on www.bobistheoilguy.com went 20k on the break-in oil and I think he only added 1 qt. to his CS.
The oil sample was shot but made it. The oil is probably good for 10k to 15k max, I change ours at 4k in our CTT because that all it drives in 1 year
I'd do 10K max later when it starts to show cleaner #'s.
Good luck, let us know if the Knock- knock leaves after the oil is changed
