I'm literally this close [ ] to buying this CPO CTT (the carmon red one) and one thing I never checked when I drove them is the trunk space. I'm imagining it is not going to be a problem, but I do play cello professionally still once in a while (Los Angeles Opera, studio stuff, etc.) and need to be sure the cello fits back there. In my E500, it fits at an angle, but easily. The cello case is 54" long and 21" at its widest point, and those who have seen a shaped cello case know it is shaped like the cello, so you get the picture...but if not, here's one from my company:

It should fit - with the seats down there is about 5 feet of floor space - by about three feet wide. Height -wise your length becomes limited above 2 feet since the rear glass slopes forward, but I assume the height isn't a limit in this instance.

I need it to lie down in the rear - height is not an issue at all. Essentially I need enough space that it will fit either straight across the back or diagonally, with the seats UP, not down. If it is 3 feet wide only, there's no way it will fit straight across.

It will fit at an angle. You can also open the central ski compartment/opening and put the top of the cello case through it so it sits straight and then it will not slide around when you are driving more aggressively. Two people can then still sit in the rear because you will not need to collapse any seat back.

From the drivers side back floor to the passenger-side roof above the rear seat is 60 inches - so it should fit angled. The ski opening is only 8x10 so not sure if the neck will fit through.
Here are some more rough dimensions (not laser accurate!)
With seat up:
Floor space
45wx38 deep
At the rear seats the distance from floor to headliner is about 33 inches
At the Hatch the distance from floor to window is about 20 inches ( this is important since the rear glass slopes)
There is about 16 inches of ceiling from just above the seats to the top of the hatch

The diagonal across the rear cargo floor can be calculated by the pythagorean theorem (it's 58.9 inches) but it would be better to either a) lay out some string on the floor and see if your cello case fits, or b) take your cello down to the dealer and try it in a real Cayenne.

I just finished putting masking tape on the floor in the configuration shown above, and it appears that is just might fit, but barely - nose to tail right on the walls, so if the walls of the side come in at all over the floor space (usually it is the other way around, usually the walls are concave to the floor) it won't fit - yikes. Could always get a smaller case, too...

The side walls are vertical. The rear seat slopes inward toward the cargo bay. The rear hatch slopes slightly inward but not much. Good luck!

depends what is going in the back seat and whether the neck can protrude into the passenger area ... if so that will give you a little more room.

you could always drive down to a local dealer and try one on.

My nearest dealer is probably 20 miles away, but I guess I could go check it out - feel bad doing it when I have NO intention of buying from them. If the measurements are exactly 45 x 38 it will fit, even if the seat leans back slightly, as it is only about 6 inches high at that point, and tapers slightly also.

Apart from the "occasional complete loss of lighting at 3AM" and the ever present "!", MECHANICALLY, the Cayenne does quite well towing 6000# (enclosed aluminum car hauler + 968Cab, on 20" wheels/summer tires, in 3" of snow, scaring the hell out of the PSM system.....alright, I was looking to end it all and take the cursed vehicle with me....but then I changed my mind and realized the 968 shouldn't suffer).

Myself, skl, and JFScheck tow quite a bit with this thing; during kart season I would tow 3x per week (20' enclosed car hauler with a single go kart in the back....say #2700).....but only during DAYLIGHT....otherwise it's another case of D batteries, 2 MagLites and a roll of racer's tape to the rescue.
