Default Are there 20" snow tires for the Cayenne?

Is anyone aware of 20" snow tires for the Cayenne? I am trying to figure out if I should take the TT I have on order with the standard 18" rims, use those for snows, and buy some aftermarket 22" rims for summer rubber. Or should I get the 20" Porsche rims, use them for snows, and get 22" for the summer.

All suggestions are welcome.

I would stick with 18" for snows. Allows for a taller sidewall and narrower width. Both of which I feel are very important in winter driving.

We've looked into this at my dealership, and we have yet to find a 20" snow tire that fits Cayenne properly. We've found 19" snow tires, but not in the correct sizes for Cayenne.

Don't go against the laws of physics. The narrower your tire the better your traction in the snow.

Actually a 17" Cayenne wheel would be even better than the 18", but the 18" wheels performs very well IMHO.

Good Luck!

frank,
please specify tire physics
narrow tire - more pressure- less contact surface
wide tire- less pressure- more surface (works in sand)

does former work better than latter or what other
factors are to consider?

Do yourself a favor and pick up a set of 18" Pirelli Ice and Snow tires.

Rennlisters,

BFG just released a 20" tire. It is the BFG All Terrain T/A. If you have had any experience with the "normal" sizes this may just be the greatest road/offroad/winter option out there.

I do not know what widths they come in as I realize that is an issue. I can state as a previous owner of several Jeep Wranglers, Cherokees, and a couple of Pick ups, this is a great tire in 15", and 16" sizes. Fairly stiff side wall on the 15's and 16's but I can only assume not as stiff as an all season "car" tires in the 20" category.

Road biased open tread design, cannot get much better than that if you are serious about playing in the snow with a porsche.

Just my 2 cents,

Wilson

I have been quite happy with my 18's mounted with Pirelli Ice & Snows. They do a very nice job, even in the wet and dry in my opinion. Regarding the physics, I don't why the narrower tires work better but the world rally boys and girls sure would have ultra wide studded snows if they worked. But instead, they have the narrow tires. Who can explain??

Default Tire size question

http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/assets/pdf/all_terrain_ta_kd.pdf

According to the BFG website, the following sizes are available in 20":

LT285/55R20D and LT325/60R20D

Will either of these fit? I'd really like to use 20" rims for mounting winter tires, and get a set of 22" to use for my summer rubber. The 18" rims just don't look as good to me.

I'm sort of new to the whole concept of tire sizes, so please excuse what seems like a silly question.

I am also looking for a suitable 20" winter tire and the size needs to be 285-40/20 as anything else impacts some of the systems such as PSM. As of this writing there is not a suitable tire. The Yoko and others are too tall. I am calling a friend at one of the tire manufacturers next week. Will post results.

Do a search. I initially contemplated this (i.e., 20" winter tires), but found out that it was not approved by PAG.

The wider the tire the more difficult to penetrate or displace the snow and therefore less surface contact/traction. The less width the better (i.e., 18" width is approved by PAG).

Default 20" winter tires

I believe Continental has a Conti4x4WinterContact in 295/40/20. But it may only be available in europe - it is not listed on Continental's US website.

THere is a Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow in a Cayenne 20" as well as a Continental and a Dunlop.
Tire Rack informs that they are just being produced and expect delivery in September.

I really think any of you who plan on using a 20" tire for winter driving will be very dissapointed with the results. I live in Montana half the year where we get 400 inches on average so I know a little about driving in deep snow. I would never even think about 20" tires. It is not only the width of the tire but the lack of sidewall. Tall and skinny tires are what we run for the best snow traction and 16" is usually the largest wheel we run. Do you want to look cool as stated above or do you really want to perform in the snow? Good luck the first time you need to stop with 20" tires.
Run the turbo 18" wheels with snow tires and you will be fine. Why have a great all wheel drive system and make tires your weak link. It makes about as much sense as putting 15" wheels on a 996 TT.

Regarding tire physics... what goes through snow better, a broom handle or a plank?

In snow the issue is not just contact patch but frontal surface area.
