Would you not say that anyone buying an old Porsche expecting Japanese car reliability was loopy. On the other hand if it floats your boat as an enthusiast then what enthusiast has a car that isn't a money pit? Seems like a conflict of ideas to be on a Porsche forum and hear people talking about what it costs to keep on the road.

It may well be that the starter is just spinning and not engaging the flywheel. Put in a new starter, and drive it.
