Default 957 Bore Scoring

How common is bore scoring really in the 957? I've done 2 PPI's so far on 2008 Cayenne Turbos and both were scored. I also had a 08 Cayenne S with bore scoring. Am I just unlucky or is this way more common then it seems? All three cars the sellers had no idea about the scoring, engines made no noises to indicate scoring. It was only determined by scoping the cylinders.

I love the 957 body style but am wondering if I should just move on to the 958.

Love 957s - an updated version of first gen 955 platform, which arguably seems to be ones with most off-road credibility. To me, it’s also the gamechanger platform of its era in that it stretched the off-road and on-road capability range of a vehicle.

Having said this, I’ve also been unlucky with V8 bore scoring with 2 of my own (have had 4 total). At least, you discovered before purchase. I personally prefer the driving dynamics of the 957 versus the 958. So I’ve been staying with the base V6 957s. My current one has 192k miles and still in solid shape.

I too love the 957 Cayenne and really don't want a 958. It's just such a process, even finding a seller that is willing to have the PPI done. I have had a few dealerships decline a PPI.

I see so many high mileage 957's that it gives me hope, but I think this scoring is really much much more common then is discussed.

2008 v8s have the highest occurrence of scoring. The cylinder honing process was changed for 2009 and 2010. Start eliminating the 08 model year from your searches as well as cars that have been in Northern climates and you'll start having some luck. I bought my 09 Turbo S with 28k miles and it was a FL car it's entire life - paid top dollar for it at the time, but was a perfect example for my wifebody project and I'll have it forever.

I don't know. I wouldn't blanket discount a 955 from a cold climate. Mine lives here in Iowa and has 150,000 on it. No bore scoring and oil analysis comes back clean every time. It lives in a heated garage and goes to my heated garage at work so if he could find one like that, no problem.

I prefer the 957 to the 955, otherwise I'd be looking at the 955's as well. The pool is extremally limited on 2009 - 2010 Turbo or Turbo S in the US, but this is what I will have to try.

I have a feeling that there are many 957 V8 owners driving around with bore scoring who have no idea.

Cheep, what do you typically wear on New Year's - a Barbour, a Borat-style Mankini Slingshot, or somewhere in between? Trying to gauge if your area's climate plays a role in this.

First pic car was serviced at the Porsche dealer and they gave it a clean bill of health!

2nd was a Turbo out of Ohio

I'm in the Northeast USA

Process changed from smooth honed to structurally honed (coated) at some point in the MY2008 run, no?

See TSB (attached; AllData DIY doc has engine numbers that can help with verifying before purchase).

With that said, sticking with MY2009 and up and you're assured the structural honing, as you indicated.
