Default Early stage bore scoring? 957 TTS

Even though it's a YouTube video, it appears the engine in this 2009 CTTS with 100K miles I'm looking at *might* have the audible signature of piston slap. I'm told it needs maybe half quart every 1200-1500 miles. I'm supposed to drive an hour to check out the car, but am apprehensive after this.

Here particularly around :35–:40

And then here from :41–:51

Hard to say from these video's.

If only an hours drive I would be inclined to make the trip.

The oil consumption is not unreasonable for 100K mi. IMO.

Haha! Sounds like he drives it like I do on mine!

I don't hear much in the video. I'd go check it out with a mechanics stethoscope.

I can tell you my 09 TTS at 50k miles use absolutely zero oil between 5000 mile oil changes, is tuned with 50% more boost than stock, and is driven aggressively quite often so that engine is consuming some oil for some reason.

I dont hear anything but from a video hard to tell. The bits I can see look clean. Any details on it? Price, location etc?

At 219k miles... its about 1.5 qt per 5000 or 2qt if I put Mobil 1 in there

My 123k mile 09 CTTS burns almost nothing between 5k mile oil changes...

I don't hear anything to concern me, but I hearing it in person is a must.

FWIW, our 955 has 110k on the clock and it burns nearly no oil, it gets filled to 3/4 up the dipstick mark and by the time 7k rolls aorund when we do a change with filter its not even to the half way mark. we got lucky.

Yeah, I'm not loving what I hear there. It's the right frequency for piston slap but it sounds a bit chirpy instead of like a metallic tapping/ticking as I would expect. So it's hard to say. My advise: don't buy this car without an in person inspection AND a quality bore scoping of all cylinders. 100k miles is right in the middle of the danger zone.

Videos are always hard to tell, but from what I hear, it sounds exactly like mine at 109K. The startup and idle make the same noises. These are pretty noisy engines in general. Along with the PDCC whine, there is no shortage of noises to think you need to be concerned about. Certainly a PPI or borescope would make you feel better. Looks really clean. Best of luck!

Appreciate all the insights and responses. I ended up viewing and purchasing an '04 CTT over the weekend. Had a few Cayenne's lined up to see and never got around to the 2009 CTTS in the video as the seller was only able to show the car Monday. I will pass along the seller to anyone interested: $137K MSRP, 100K miles asking $30K.

The 955 is in good company with the 993. Another pig for the pen.
  1. I use the Jenniskens UDT999 diagnostics tool which provides everything I'd ever need to track down codes/faults. There's not much it can't do for $360. What's the consensus on scan tools for these piggies?
  2. Anyone mind PM'ing a link to the Technical Service Bulletins and the workshop manual specific to a 2004 CTT? Thanks!

Congrats on the new piglet!
1.) “forum wisdom” is going to yell durametric. I personally wasn’t convinced, and returned it. Failed to read headlight modules, didn’t show ATF temp… I couldn’t find anything it could do (that I need) that the Foxwell nt530 can’t do for $100 less and in a handheld that does not require a laptop)… but I also didn’t have the energy to do a full 1v1 feature by feature comparison before the return window closed. Would love to see that!
2) me, too please, but for a 2009 CTTS if possible! Thanks!

Congrats on the pick up! My buddy had an 04 CTT and it was honestly what got me started on Cayennes. Great rig! When you know the right car, you know...

I'm not too familiar with all the scan tool options but like Crozzer says, most everyone points to Durametric. I have an icarsoft CR Max and it seems to be pretty good for what it does. It's pretty good with the codes and resets most things. I use it on my 09 CTTS, wife's XC60 and daughter's X3. As long as whatever you're using does what you need, it's all good.

If you continue to search, I think there has been a few postings of the workshop or service manual. I may have d/l it at some point as well. If you can't find it upon searching, I'll see what I can find in my files. Knock on wood that I haven't really needed it yet.

Best of luck on the new ride! We need pics!
