I've read a few threads about DIY instructions on replacing the ugly orange side markers with the Euro-style markers. However, I don't really trust my own mechanical skills and it'll probably take me the entire day to do it.

At any rate, I've contacted my dealer and they want 2 hrs. of labor (approx. $200) for this work because they told me it requires the front bumper removal. In my mind, I think that's too expensive.

Anyone know of another venue in Southern California that would be cheaper?

Ok, just phoned another nearby dealer, they are asking for 1/2 hr. of labor (approx. $50). Now that's much more reasonable!

Don't understand why there's such a big discrepancy between the two dealers, which is about 30 miles apart.

I'd say the 1st dealer is not trying to rip you off, they're just stupid, as they think they have to remove the front bumper.

You think you would get better service because I'd perceived as a higher value customer to the first dealer, but it appears that's definitely not the case here...

My impression is that the parts and service guys don't care much where you bought your car, unless your sales person is involved to make the connection.

I don't see why the front bumper would need to be removed either, however, having done this myself, I don't think the standard instructions, as seen on RennTech and elsewhere, tell the whole story. They leave out the removal and reinstall of the top holddown screw, and that screw is a bear to get to! The sidemarker will probably stay in without the top screw but, in my opinion, that's a halfa** installation. If I were the dealer I would include time to remove the wheel and wheelwell liner. It would just make life easier and ensure a good install.

Check your owner's manual. I just replaced my side markers on my Targa with a little instruction from the board, and it took no more than 10 minutes, after which another reply mentioned the owner's manual. My Cayenne is at home and I'm not, so I can't look at it. But after I did the Targa, I realized that these things are made so you can change the bulbs, so, DUH, its really easy to pull them out (and replace them). The Cayenne might be a little more work, not sure. In any case, $200 sounds ridiculous.

Those instructions are easy. As I said, they don't talk about the top screw. If you want to break off the top tab and go without that screw, it shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

Removal is not so bad, it's the installation that is a pain because it's difficult to hold the wheelwell liner out with one hand and operate some tool with the other. Three hands would be helpful. Here is a photo of the racheting screwdriver from the Porsche toolkit on the screw in question. This should give you an idea of the angle and location. The bottom screw is not too hard.

I just installed the clear side lights and had no trouble at all. I used a 20mm torx and did not have a 25 mm so I used a hex head. It worked just fine. Did it in my driveway, took about 20 for both. Not as easy as my 996 twin but not nearly as difficult as reported above. I simply followed the directions and had no trouble. Also, my dealer told me it required removing the bumper. After pressing a little bit I found out they were referring to the inner bumper.
My mechanical skill is limited and I am not in the habit of working on my own cars.
