Default Check oil level....

I just got a check oil level warning.

Any idea if it is safe to drive? I would assume there is some margin of safety.

Since I need to drive home to get the oil to add, I would like to be sure that all will be safe.

I always keep 2 quarts of Mobil 1 OW-40 oil in the left hand compartment at the rear for just those events besides for toping off the oil as needed.

The same goes for my 911 using Mobil 1 15W50 oil.

BTW, to answer your question I believe there should be a safety margin in regards to the amount of oil available in order to get you to the nearest service station just as with the 911.

That happened to me too. The level was observed to decrease, when checked at each fuel fill.

When it was checked and found to be at the low level line, the fuel station did not have the disposable paper funnel, to permit me to add oil. So, my plan was to wait until the next fill.

Once the engine was started, the oil level warning illuminated. The action of wiping the dipstick clean removed enough oil to drop the level below the limit.

It seems reasonable to conclude that a short drive will not cause problems.

Have you CHECKED the oil level with the dipstick? Is the level ON the stick?

Level is on the very tip of the stick.

I just drove to a local mobil station and added a quart of mobil 1.

I planned on a oil change this weekend too. What timing.

Default CHECK ENGINE OIL

2 weekends ago I was 65 miles from home and the light came on in my TT. I checked it and it was almost down to the minimum mark. I check the oil regularly and had put in about 1/2 qt in 1750 miles of relatively hard break-in miles. Anyway I took it easy on the way home and it was at minimum. I added 3/4 qt. Have since put a new qt. in the rear compartment for future away from home use.
Had a '89 930 turbo that used even more oil on break-in. I do believe in agressive break-ins though.

RAKLAW please elaborate on your aggresive break-in how do you manage that? Im expecting my TT in June and was wondering about the break in.

fireo, see this for the procedures I followed with my C-T. It now uses MAYBE a quart per 10,000-mile oil change.

Default Break In

With the exception of the numerous oil changes in the post, I really get on it, even right from the dealer with 8 miles on the clock. Not full throttle red line, but close.. This is the way
I have broken in some 25 hi-po vehicles, and after break in I cannot recall any engine faults or excessive oil use.. Don't be afraid to get on it.. Break it in hard, and it will run fast and relaible

Just remember you're not only seating rings on breakin.

Struts, drive train, turbo/engine bearings.

My guess is lower gear variable high revs (M1-M4) on occasion and frequent gliding (to allow gas free oil into cylinders and reduced load on lifters)

My .02 (don't change break in oil too early)

Hi,
and my 3c..............

Do not make the mistake of NOT allowing the engine to have some short bursts at full throttle and up to 4k rpm. Let the engine "lug" a little as the extra compression pressure on the rings will rapidly assist the sealing process

Ensure that the engine is warmed up (to normal core temperature - not gauge reading) beforehand and this can take up to 30 minutes, avoid all unneccesary idling

The 928 GTS (similar engine structure) had an oil use problem when new and some of this may have been attributed to being "too easy-gentle" during running in

Regards
