Cayenne S E1 4.5 2003 constant engine tick, ticking noise
Hello, I recently purchased cayenne s 4.5 v8 2003, it has weird engine knocking, ticking sound, I replaced chain tensioner but it's still the same. I doesn't burn any oil, engine works very normal except for this, not too much smoke coming from exhaust nothing unusual. Can someone point me to right direction on which thing to tackle first? Thanks in advance..
Here is video of the sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?fbclid...ature=youtu.be

Burning Brakes
Hate to tell you this (especially on Christmas), but that's the typical sound of scored cylinders. There's no reasonable solution in trying to salvage the vehicle. Cheapest route is a used engine and the labor alone will cost more than the SUV is worth. It's also not uncommon for people to buy a used engine only to find out it has scored cylinders too.

thank you so much for reply, I was really hoping to not hear that haha. The things is it's not burning oil that's what I don't get, I thought if it was cylinder walls it would start to burn a lot of oil, but thanks anyways I'll figure something out...

Sometimes it's hard to detect the knocking sound, but not in that video - it's one of the worst I've heard. Pull the sparkplugs and you'll be able to tell which cylinder(s) have the issue.

I hate to pile on here with bad news, but all the comments above are spot on- it is cylinder scoring and the engine is very close to self-destructing. At Petza914 says, pull the plugs and you will find one completely fouled. Do a compression test and you will find one or more really low. I am guessing it will be cylinder number 8.

Echoing what Petza914 said, this is likely the worst piston knock I've heard in these cars. I am actually kind of amazed it runs at all and it's mind boggling that it isn't burning oil. What's up with those valves up top besides the intake manifold?

I have a similar noise that is getting worse, at 240k miles on my 06 cayenne S, what would be the best course of action? I don't know if its better to sell it cheap or part it out as of now.

240K is a pretty good run for a Cayenne. I would sell it cheap and move on. Parting them out is a pain (and illegal to do unless you are licensed) in some states, like in Washington, where I live.

The only way to avoid the replacement engine developing bore-scoring problems, will require installing a used Chevrolet engine (or other brand V-8 available in your area that is cheap and reliable) and make adapters to fit the Cayenne transmission, adapt the engine electronics to work with the Cayenne, and fabricate motor mount adapters to hold the Chevrolet engine in the Cayenne engine bay. Any used Cayenne engine you install will give you the same bore-scoring problem later.
