Default n00b Questions about a 2004 CTT I just bought

After many hours reading and studying here, i finally bought a 2004 CTT with 150K miles fairly cheap. It was sight unseen but had some documentation on coolant pipes, fuel pump, coolant reservoir, etc being replaced. It arrived yesterday and it's really dirty inside but seems to run OK. I am upgrading from a nissan frontier 4banger project truck that was too reliable and too easy to get cheap parts.

Here's the issues that I have come across so far. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I spent all day today trying to research these, but haven't found anything conclusive.

  1. After driving around the block and parking on a slight decline, there was water dribbling from the front bumper and through the fog light on the drivers side. It looked like a coolant leak, but it didn't have a color or smell like antifreze. All the other issues with coolant that I have read about were on passenger side or back of the engine. I moved the car to the level driveway and had to go inside for an errand. I returned and the puddles were already dry. I ran the car at idle for 45 minutes to try to reproduce and the temperature was steady at 180 and nor more leak. I'm probably going to work on drain pipe cleaning this next weekend
  2. The driving programmes (diff lockers) don't work. I tried while in neutral and while going 5mph and nothing changes. There's no notifications or errors on the screen. The led's light up for a second when the car is turned on.
  3. When driving forward at night, the parking sensors keep beeping at random intervals. This didn't happen during daylight
  4. It was 55 degrees outside but the dashboard vents were blowing frosty cold air while set to auto and 75 degrees. It was warmer than 55 in the car but it felt like AC was fighting with heater.
  5. GPS loading stuck at one bar and never loads.
  6. only got one keyfob. Can I just duplicate the metal stick if I want a second traditional key?

1. Could be trapped rainwater. Keep an eye out for it.
2. I believe the car has to be stopped in neutral/park for these to change. Sounds like you tried that - this is when a Porsche specific code reader becomes very handy.
3. Possible bad sensor - but how to find? Possibly with a Porsche specific code reader - you can activate and read them to see if they're all working, dunno if it will show one false triggering.
4. Probably a bad stepper motor on the heater box. PITA job. Again - a Porsche diagnostics tool can activate each stepper/flapper and see if they're working and if they're working as fast as they should.
5. Bad GPS disk?
6. Well - you'd have a key you could use to unlock the car, but it won't start it. The real key has a transponder in it coded to the ECU/security system in the car. A new one has to be coded to the car - dealer needs to do it, and the total cost will probably be around $400.

Welcome to the forums!

I had 1 - Turned out to be a cracked headlight washer jet. You’ll soon tell if it’s that as you will need to keep topping the washer fluid up.
Good luck and welcome!

Me too on this. It seems that the headlight washer feed is higher than the windshield. Which makes sense. If you run low, the headlight washers stop using fluid.

Put a piece of white paper under it and see if it's blue.

I will guess that the rocker switch for the 'off road' settings is bad. If you try to switch when the car doesn't want you to, it will give you a 'Not Permissible' message on the screen. You need to be in neutral and moving very slowly or stopped.

Keys are a pain. As noted, the fob has a transponder. Without it coded properly, the car WILL NOT start. There's been a ton of discussion on this.

Thanks for the replies. I just found a couple oil drippies on my driveway and suspect that the valve covers are in need of some TLC.
got me a Foxwell NT530 on the way and looking forward to seeing what all goodness I'm getting into. I also got a rocker switch on the way for offroad settings. I'll report back to see if this fixes.
Keyfob thing sucks. I guess I'm going to have to tie a hubcap to my only keyfob so I don't have to worry about losing it.
I'm thinking that there's a busted washer jet on the drivers side too. the stream was steady for a couple minutes but stopped. I can't reproduce it. I can't drive too far because I'm trying to sell my other project and haven't transfered the insurance and registration yet.

Damn, I type a reply and everything gets erased and I get asked to log in again

Been there. I guess there is an auto log-out function if you are idle at the forum for too long. I've been in that situation so many times, I automatically use Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C pretty much any time I post a longer reply.

The coded key thing is a universal EuroTax across the brands. I feel you. It is lunacy.

My son in the first week of driving last week lost the Volvo fob... Grrr! But even the Volvo key is ~$400 and needs to go to the dealer.

Foxwell NT530 arrived today. I only got a few minutes to play with it. I can't figure out how to make it dump all the error codes. I did run the test for climate control and got the following:

2100 -servo motor for footwell flap
1809 - drive motor for temperature valve
2101 servo motor for side blower
657 servo motor for central vents
1810 drive motor for temperature valve right
1596 servo motor for fresh air
710 servo motor for defrost fan
1592 air quality sensor
1299 gateway

I suspect A/C drain.

No errors for the Transfer case control system. Replacement switch is on the way..

I drove it around the neighborhood again and parked on the downhill and again there was water leaking in front of the drivers side tire. I put a paper towel down and it's dull pinkish salmon colored water. It smelled like Windex and not antifreze. This is annoying because I thought I knew the difference between antifreeze and washer fluid. It got dark outside before I could dig in any deeper. Tomorrow I'm taking it in to get the Georgia Emissions test so I can register it. Need to sell the old reliable truck so I can transfer the license plate.

I cleared space in my small garage and can hopefully get it in this weekend and start working on some of this stuff.

Did you get your A/C codes to clear?

It’s possible you can see the leak of washer fluid by just removing the wheel liner: the connector on my old GTS had come unsnapped and was super easy to resnap back on

ORIGINAL RESPONSE DELETED. I realized I had responded to a thread started two years ago that someone just bumped.

Atl-Wagen, if you are getting those codes then it's your HVAC servo motors failing. If you have the early revision of the HVAC servo motors (MY2003-2004) then you need to replace them with the revised part. If you have the later version and are getting a code then I would try cleaning the potentiometers with a good contact cleaner (e.g. DeOxit).
