Default MT Owners- Anybody Upgraded their Shifter?

Let's be honest, at least in my car, stock shifting action is long and rubbery, not to mention notchy in 1st and 2nd gear. Have brand new fluid and shifter cables are adjusted fine.
Has anyone tried upgrading it to 958 MT shifter box? I heard it feels much better than 957.
955/957 part #: 95542401000, ~$200
958 part # 95842401000 , ~$320
It's the #2 in the diagram,

Already tried installing this but the top portion of the lever was too short for my liking. I'd rather keep the height of the shifter same, but reduce shifter throw by 25-30%, and improve the feel. I saw online that 911 guys swapping new 911 shifter mechanism boxes into their old 996, that's why I got this idea of possibly swapping 958 shifter box into my car. I wish I could find a used one for like $100, otherwise $320 is a bit hard to swallow if it doesn't fit.

Yes, 997 shifters are very popular mod for 996 guys.
Never heard of anyone doing this with Cayenne. Do you have 957 GTS or V6? Are both boxes the same?

I have a V6.
Dagram shows only one number for that part, so I am pretty sure both V6 and V8 manual cars use the same item.

The 957 6MT shifts like a rubber broomstick in a bucket: vague, feels like popping out of gear always.... nothing precision about it, unlike Audi's stellar slushbox.

Meh...

Has anyone tackled this yet? A short shiftr would be great, but I'm tempted to refresh mine with some of the same parts at this point.

Switching to Royal Purple Sychromax has greatly improved shifting characteristics of my 75K mi. GTS M/T. The improvement was immediate.

Notchiness is gone.

Thanks to Rossi for the suggestion.

Definitely second this. Entirely different experience with new/updated fluid. Was the same with my SC, funny how some things don’t change 40 years later.

That’s on my short list...complete fluid change upcoming, just having a hard time nailing down all the appropriate specs for the fluids.

I haven't been able to find a used one yet, and a $320 is a bit hard pill to swallow if it doesn't work.

Currently I am thinking of getting weighted shift ****, https://www.rennline.com/Rennline-Al.../I14.1/SILVER/

Factory shift **** weighs around 90grams, rennline rep said their shift **** is just under a pound. It also looks shorter so it might be worth giving a try for $95. Not sure how liveable it is during cold / hot temperatures but for less than hundred bucks I think it's worth a try. I can always have it wrapped in leather if needed.

Also, function first sells a customizable shift ***** but they're bit more expensive ($150+).

Weighted shift ***** have always helped, if you want to keep it looking OEM I have heard about people wrapping solder or similar under the boot. Can the oem shifter simply be cut down?

Well I got the rennline shift **** but haven't installed it yet.
It barely weighs 180 grams even with papers and packaging, nowhere near "just under a pound" that their rep emailed me.
I emailed rennline and we'll see what they have to say about this misinformation...

Have you tried to take the existing **** off yet? I would be curious to see how it separates from the boot and what the interface looks like between the **** and the shifter.

Very similar thread here: https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...l-957-gts.html

I asked my Indy to install new shift **** while the GTS was in for other work, can confirm all of the info in above thread. I opted for the 997 turbo **** PN # 99742407550FOT.

IMHO it’s what should have been OEM, much improved in all aspects including aesthetics.
