The white base under the silver strip is what gets snapped in place.

I removed mine today, and have the replacement on order. I’m doing a partial tear down of a 6MT version to get it ready for RENNsport VI. Here are some pictures to show removal without taking off the rear bumper. In all pictures, the blue arrow points to the tabs or locating holes that are closest to the hatch, and the green are farthest from the hatch.

First picture shows the tabs that hold it in place as you are removing it. The tabs in the bumper really do bend waaaaay up but seem rather flexible. This is 10 year old car, so I was not terribly concerned about breaking one, but none broke. If you’re concerned about these breaking, removing the bumper would be a far safer way to remove the strip base.
Removing the white base for the silver bumper strip.

This is a picture of the white base upside down, showing the tabs and and where they locate.

This is a picture of the bumper with the strip removed.

Touareg posted an excellent write-up on painting the rear bumper trim here: https://rennlist.com/forums/cayenne-...olds-it-3.html
