First Porsche: Base vs Spyder

First Porsche: Base vs Spyder
Hi all. Newbie here. Great site. Thanks all for the info.
I'm ready to jump in after years of waiting. I've read just about everything I can get my hands on, and have come to a point where I would love some advice.
I know I want a Boxter, just dont know if I should start with a Base or S or jump in to a Boxter Spyder.
I Love, Love the look and IDEA of a Spyder, but am a bit concerned about the Driveability of the car.
I plan on using the car mostly sunday driving with a road trip or two thrown in for fun.
I'm concerned that the increased noise from the top and the stiffer performance will make the car less fun to drive than a Base.
I considered just spending less and jumping in with a base to get my feet wet and then upgrading later but my preference is to just buy the car I really want and hold it forever. ( whatever forever even means)
My next step is to get out and drive them more. I have driven once, but need more time before I choose.
Opinions Welcome and appreciated.
Best,
JM

I just rejoined the Porsche Family after 23 years. My first Porsche was a 1977 911s. I drove it for 10 years.
In August of this year I bought a 1998 Boxster (Base) with 32k miles. Its almost like a new car, I love it. Drives great,

I'd say go for a 987.1S - you won't be disappointed with the performance, may get nice upgrades/options, and the drivability viz. a Spyder for local (non-track) driving would make it worth the extra 20-30% over a Base.
The other advantage in buying a S vs. Base is that you can always wring another 20-30hp by slapping on some mods - CAI, Plenum/Throttle Body upgrade, and full or partial catless exhaust parts and add an ECU flash to smooth out hp/torque curves.
I flung a couple of Base models around, but once I drove a S I knew it was for me!'

The Spyder is an awesome car. A lot of fun to drive and the looks are fantastic. It is a little louder than a standard cab with the top up, but who drives it with the top up. But if you must, the noise is nothing to worry about. And once you remove/install the top, it's a very simple procedure. If you like the Spyder...get it. You won't regret it.

All the Boxsters are fun to drive, but if you want the enjoyment of a true sports car with some modern creature comforts the Spyder can't be beat. As for "daily" driver my wife and I, both over 70 but young at heart, drove our Spyder from South Texas to parade this past summer towing a small trailer and it was a very comfortable and enjoyable trip. The Spyder is a unique and special vehicle.

I just drove my Spyder over 1,500 miles in two days with my wife in the car. We were comfortable and while there was definitely increased wind noise over what you might find in a regular Boxster (I would have no idea as I have never ridden in a regular Boxster), it was certainly tolerable. Trust me, my wife would have said something if it was a real issue.

The Spyder is the best driver's car Porsche has made in a long time. And one of the best looking. Plus, it's the most pure sports car and most fun to drive. Most likely it will hold it's value better than the other boxster variants - the magic combination of ingredients that make up the Spyder is not likely to be repeated any time soon.
With your planned usage of the car, there is no better one available with the Porsche badge.
