2003 Boxster base, 99,000 miles. Checked over for IMS by ex-factory Porsche mechanic 3 years ago. No issues, Mobil 1 oil changes.

The motor was is a rebuild. I'd have to go through my notes to find the guys name, but he's in San Bernardino, Ca.
he had also installed an LN IMS bearing.
I have about 10000 +/- miles on the "new" motor and it's really strong.... Oil is crystal clear when I check the dip stick. I use 5w-40 Mobil 1 oil. Its gets pretty hot down here on the Mississippi Coast during summer traffic....
I drive it at least 4 times a week and go through a full heat cycle when I drive it....and I drive it the way Ferdinand Porsche intended it to be driven.
My Wife and I also take long trips in it....800-1000 miles at a time.

2003 Boxster S. Evidence of minor oil leak at slightly under 60K miles (two years ago) while visiting Colorado Springs. Had dealer replace IMS with TuneRS direct oil feed unit tapping into R head for oil source, replaced crankshaft seal, replaced clutch, replaced valve cover seals and performed 60K maintenance. Total bill around $5K.

I neglected to ask them if the source of the leak was IMS or crankshaft seal.

I note that the shifting was (and still is) much improved after this service was performed, so something related to the shift cables was lubricated or adjusted.

Bill seems fair for the service. Enjoy the car freely knowing you've got it dialed!

2001 Boxster S, 6 speed manual, 117,000 miles
No failure
Replaced at 117,000 with LN Engineering solution
Oil change every year or 5,000 miles, what ever comes first.

Replaced Variocam chain tensioner pads on both banks at the same time. They were almost 100% gone.

No failure, replacing the IMS at same time as clutch overhaul and lightweight flywheel upgrade on a 2004 Boxster S, 43,000 miles.

Default IMS bearing

My wife's 99 Boxster, 165,000 miles, I replaced the clutch myself at about 120,000 miles, installed the new type retainer and seal on the IMS, but the bearing seemed fine, still good. The car is driver hard and does not get much garage time.

Question - how many have installed a quality dual row 5204-2rs or the original style dual row 6204dua17 and had a successful installation? And how many miles are currently on the installation?

2000 Boxster bought at auction with no keys and listed as mechanical problem. Solved the key problem by getting a key for the door made locally but it did not fit the ignition. Replaced the steering lock assembly with one from Ebay. Sent the immobilizer and the ignition key to Lostporschekeys.com. A week latter I could light up the dash (95,000 miles) and hear the engine crank but stopped there and pulled trans. I found an aluminum Aasco flywheel with the dual mass clutch - solid disc! On to the IMS - original bearing/flange with both seals still on the double row bearing but was loose!! Bits of metal around the IMS but the sump was relatively clean when pulled, I am seriously considering putting the original style bearing - 6204dua17
(BD20-17-A-DDUA17NX01-NSK available from 123bearing.com) back in.
There may be other issues with the engine. Oil in the #4 exhaust port and difficulty getting the cam lock in 4-6 bank when I first locked the cam. Realized that one needs to lock the exhaust cam next to the pulley end of the engine (at #1cylinder) and drop the tensioners to remove the IMS bearing flange!!. So I do not want to spend a lot of money to find out I have a core engine only.
I appreciate any thoughts (including I am an idiot!) Thanks, John R

John,

Just some clarification. The plastic seals on the bearing were loose or the bearing itself was loose?

Sorry that was not clear. Bearing itself is loose and seals were still in place but damaged. ***** and cages are intact but "assuming" wear on the races. Oil was in bearing but not full as it could leak past the damaged seals. Maybe a 1/4" of oil in the tube when I pulled the bearing as the engine has been drained for over a week. "6204DUA17 058 NSK JAPAN" on seal.
