Angry I am NOT impressed!

Was driving home today and the turn signal switch in the steering column decided to give up the ghost! Can still activate the turn signals but does not function with steering.. NOT IMPRESSED!

60k miles and this! My 928 is 31 years old and still has the original turn switch assembly! So far on my 02' Boxster have replaced clutch master cylinder, both door lock assemblies, both window regulators, oil separator, and water pump (OK, I'll give you the water pump). NOT IMPRESSED! Step it up Porsche... quality for sake of profit is going to cost you customers and more importantly reputation! The first 5 years does not define quality construction.

And my '01S with 58K+ miles had none of those parts fail. (seatbelt latch, an O2 sensor, battery and tires) Neither did my '99 with 26k ever have a failure of any kind. Both were more reliable and cheap to maintain than any of the cars I have owned which had supposed high reliability reputations.

Different experiences and opinions from different folks.

I have found the build quality to be random with regards to all of Porsche's cars built after 1999.

Opened up the turn signal switch. Turns out it is simply degraded and cracked plastic on the turn signal stalk. Probably from the heat. I'm just surprised the sub-assemblies, especially the plastics (or because of the plastic) hasn't held up as nicely as prior cars. Note to self: correlate with breaks in Uppsala...

Funny all 3 of my 928s and my 1 944 all had broken turn signals. I thought it was one of those Porsche quirks.

Most people in most cars don't have this issue because they don't use their turn signals to save wear and tear on the switch.

this seems to be an affliction with many Porsche and BMW drivers.

I think if they had kept hand building really high quality cars, they would have ceased to exist by now. I'd rather have sub par quality Boxsters than nothing:-) I've had relatively few problems with my Boxster S, but I do like the old cars better.

Back in the 80's, when I was a tech at a Porsche dealer, I changed 944 turn signal clusters by the dozen. Don't remember changing any 928s (but they were all about the same). 911s didn't have clusters everything was seporate and never failed. I'm getting my 1st 986 in a couple of weeks, but it wouldn't surprise me if it fails in the future. But then again, down here in Miami, nobody uses their turn signals :-)
