Default How good are Boxster shocks?

I have just had an e-mail conversation with a rep from Koni and he says they have no intention to build adjustable shocks for the Boxster, yet they make them for 911, 924, 928, 914, 944 and Cayenne models. How good are the stock shocks for auto-x? On a 60 second course, how much time would I drop by switching to better shocks like the Motons?

I think trying to attribute a time to a product is the wrong approach. Too many variables there, including how much that lost time is worth in $$$ to you. What is the problem you are trying to solve? Do you just want it stiffer in general? What is your target?

Personally, in my car, I would prefer LSD first. Then I would move into shocks. Obviously remote reservoir shocks are the top of the line... but there are intermediate steps using standard coilovers.

Well, my problem is that I will be running a base Boxster in AS at the SCCA Nationals so I'm limited as to what I can do. The cars balance and handling are awesome but my previous experience with good shocks tells me they are significantly better than stock. I'm not trying to fix any handling issues but I want to make a great handling car into a winning car.

A base 986 in SCCA AS will be very tough.. I think they are underpowered and overweight compared to some of the other class competitors.

You are preaching to the choir, that's why I think they should be in BS but until then it's all I have.

I have a base 987 and will be competing in AS Nationally this year. Hope to see you out there.

Search SCCAforums dot com for Boxster. There was a pretty lively and informed discussion on 986/98S and 987 including shock talk. Rob Faulkner ocmpeted in a 986S several years abo and had custom doubles made for it. He felt the stock shocks were pretty good and went no faster with the $$$ investment in custom.

One thing you should do with the car if you haven't already is retrofit the M030 sport suspension. And I agree that a base 986 should be in B Stock.

I found a great thread on the SCCA forum which answers all my questions. It turns out that the stock Boxster shocks are really, really good.

Won't going to aftermarket shocks take you out of A Stock?

Not if the replacements are the same length as stock and the spring perches are the same location and are no more than double adjustable. You can even run remote resevoir shocks in stock.
