Question Scary, Boxster purchaser

I seem to be reading about quite a few Boxster engines "blowing up"
From what I read, this can happen to low mileage cars in addition to older ones.
Seems also that PORSCHE refuses to make good on any of these
I'm getting worried about buying a Boxster....hmmm...a Z4 is looking better and better...
Am I worrying too much? Anyone work out a % of the problem occuring?

I can only speak from my experience I purchased 02-s new and for the past 3 years have been flogging it at various tracks. My mechanicals have been: throwout bearing (warranty), 1 RMS (warranty), lots of rotors (warranty until year 4 very nice dealer), throttle sensing switch (non warranty).

I too have seen and heard the engine failure stuff but so far I have been OK. Although that being said my engine will likely grenade at my next event.

They are great cars, loads of fun to drive and I believe rather durable. My only gripe is that they are down on power when compared to gt3, etc.

FYI--I just picked up a 2000 Boxster S 3.2 6-speed a couple of weeks ago with 97k miles on the odometer that had a blown engine.

I bought it from the original owner who refused to put another 10K-13K into a factory created engine when the intermediate shaft went out. Basically, he did not want to go with a rebuilt or salvaged engine for obvious reasons.

I am now in the market to find a low mileage 3.2 engine and possibly a new factory created one for a reasonable price.

I have a 3.2 with a thrown rod, disintegrated exhaust valve, and what should be a cracked sleeve...

Richgreenster:

What is the condition and mileage on the 3.6 and your asking price?

Thanks

Dak, don't get too paranoid. There are lots of solid cars out there, you just hear about the ones that break most often on forums. I bought a 01 S last year with 55K and not a drop of RMS leak. There are a bunch of them out there with really high mileage on original motors.

Conduct due diligence and get a PPI. If it feels off, walk. There are plenty of these out there.

We absolutely love our 986S... it's such a fun car to drive and it makes the Subaru feel like a delivery van.

I don't have a 3.6 for sale. Sorry to miss lead you. But It was a future project that I was going to do, but when Porsche built the new 295hp boxster s I decided to wait for the prices to come down alittle. BUT If I had a boxster S with a blown engine, I would go the 3.4L route.

My '02 S has around 13k miles on it with absolutely no leaks or problems. It isn't a daily driver, but I do enjoy it in warm months and don't exactly baby it. If my engine were blown, I'd definately seek out a larger displacement 996 motor; talk about best of both worlds.

Default A Z4 ain't a Boxster, believe me.

..they are not bad cars but they are built from the parts bin of the rest of the BMW lineup.

The Boxster was designed from the ground up and is consistently picked as a Top Ten by C&D and an All Star by Automobile magazine.

You will feel ONE with the vehicle.

Now, I 've actually had one of the Intermediate shaft failures on my '02 2.7 and presently own a '04 Spyder Anniversary Edition. I have 59,000 miles on it and use it ALWAYS. It has been on 3 cross country trips (PA to CA and back '05/PA to WA and back in '06 and PA to CA and back this winter)

I'm 65 and my wife is 60 and we travel often in this car with ROW M030 and
18" wheels...less tiring then our G35X.

I also AX often and take it to track days.

So find one and enjoy....I can't think of another car I'd rather have, drive or look at.
