Post Boxter convertable top problem

I have seen a problem on several Boxters. When putting the top down the body part that lifts up kinks and bends. The issue is a broken lift arm that is made out of plastic. The problem that happens is the body cover bends and requires going to the body shop to repair. It appears that one side lifts and the broken side does not. I checked with the dealer and the arm is almost 4 months to get. I can’t even get a specific date. My local dealer has several Boxters sitting waiting the part. Am I the only one to have a $2100.00 fix to get the cover repaired and the part replaced?

One word: HARDTOP.

On a more serious note, you have my condolences. $2100??!! Geez. What year is your car? How long out of warranty? I would raise hell with PCNA about this problem. Perhaps they will help.

It is a 1997 with 14,000 miles. The dealer has 3 or 4 in with the same issue. Warranty is not an option. The ones at the dealer look like the covers are bent up to 45 degrees. This is a serious issue for any boxter owner. You don't know the rod is broken until you try to put the top down and your cover kinks and bends. At that point it goes from a normal fix to a $2100.00 fix.

First I've heard of this, but I guess I can go check my tonneau cover (wing thingy) to see if I see any signs of wear, cracking, etc...

Have you tried a salvage yard? There are several listed in Pano and Excellence that deal in Porsche parts, bet you could get one there a LOT faster and a LOT cheaper than from Porsche...

my fear is that the used one will also break. The part that broke is plastic. The local dealer has several cars with thew same problem waiting parts. A couple of these bent the cover further than the one I have. A couple look like one side is pointed up 45 degrees. My fear is that I am going to put a used one on just to have it break and do the same thing.

Anyone know if the same plastic part is on the newer 2.7L Boxsters?

I guess I'll check tonight when I get home.

The parts are deep in the back of the car. Mine are red plastic.

Maybe if you know someone in the biz they could make you a part out of aluminum?

I smell a good chance to create an aftermarket piece...

I've identifed a number of top problems. Cables, little red end, etc. The part is 986.561.279.01. Porsche will only sell you the whole rod, not just the end. It's the rod with the red end. I'm working on a steel replacement for the red plastic end that breaks. It's in the machine shop now. I'm hoping to have something by next week. If anyone is interested, plz zip me an email.
