Default Question on engine oil capacity

Changed the oil in my Boxster this weekend, it took exactly 10 quarts to reach the full mark.

Going over my recepts from the dealer when they used to change the oil, I notice the most
oil they ever filled it with was 8.7 quarts.

Why the difference? I heard somewhere most dealers vacuum the oil out and it leave > 1 quart in the engine!

What do you all think of this difference in oil capacity??

SHOULDNT BE 10 QTS
full fill after an hour of drain time is usually 9.3 or so

You sure you put the drain plug back in?

Sounds like you did overfill a little - probably because it takes time for the oil to reach the sump and register on the dipstick.

May not be an issue - I'm sure Porsche built-in some tolerance for overfill.

Will he be ok Brad, or should he drop a little to be safe?

What I did was after a 30 min plug out drain.
Filled with 8 qts of oil and started engine and brought up to 180deg.

Turned engine off, checked dip stick after 5 min. Nothing on the dipstick.
Put 1 qt in and rechecked dipstick 5 min later. Now at low mark.

Started engine and ran for 5 min stopped and rechecked 5 min. Still at low mark...

So at this point 9qts got me to the lowmark on the dipstick with the engine oil level light agreeing??????

becasue you ran the negine it will show lower then reality as the oil hasnt yet drained back inot the engine.
10qts i wouldnt worry to much i have seen lots of people do it.
if your concerned just drop the filter housing 2-3 times

Thanks Brad!

The bigger question I had is:
Looking at dealer invoices, the most oil they ever put into my car was 8.45 qt's???
and it always cameback from the dealer with a full oil level.

Why the difference??

Did you use liter or quart bottles?

1 US quart = 0.94635295 liter

If they use an automated line system to fill the calibration of the amount pumped vs what it thinks it pumped could be diffrent.
our pumps will do a lil over 9 qts when you request 8.7
nothing to really worry about
8.5-10 your gonna be just fine

The Land Rover dealer poured in 7 liters after a Oil & Filter change ... manual stated 5.8 liters. Well ... had to take the truck back after 1 week as the filter blew oil all over the place. Dealer constantly did this for every change. I had to bring it back and have the level adjusted as their auto meter was calibrated to 7.3 Liters (I use synthetic poured from a bottle) as an excuse. Told them they poured it from bottles .... no excuse!!! Why does this always happen no matter what dealer one goes to? Does no one check the dipstick anymore???

BTW. Put out the liter VS QT as some are moving to liters (as we have here) and may not of adjusted the labels. One has to ask to rule out that possibility.

If it's anything like my SE7 (which I love), they probably assumed it would loose the excess before you got it home!

Just a little LR humor there!

No excuse for a dealer overfill - they do this all day every day, and it's a nice cash cow for them - they should be spot-on.

Do all my own now, so I can be as **** as I like over fill levels

I need a distribution contract with Mobil to cover the LR for all it's various lubes, the 2 P-Cars and the VW Wagon.

Anyone know where I can buy this stuff in bulk??

And how come the LR always leaks some oil, but it never seems to go down that much, while my 996 doesn't leak, but always needs a top up between services?

LOL!

I was doing both diffs, T-Case, Trans Fluid and Engine Oil that day, as well as greasing my shaft!

The T-Case is a b!tch to get to - especially the filler port up behind the E-Brake drum - so a little xtra clearance with the ramps is nice.

Plus I did the Nerf Bar install, and the extra ramp height was perfect for my Sears+Mobil height jig

Any way, going up and down 4 ramps at the same time in your garage is just fun!

Nice beasty ....... friend owns an indipendant P-Car shop ... and he lets me borrow the "Wrenches" for repairs (get parts at HIS cost) ...

My 03 SE-7 ....

One may want to ramp a Rhinowagon to get more tools under it ....

BTW ... mine has stop leaking ... use Castrol Syntec ...
