Bought a 2002 Boxster
Hi all,
Thought i'd share. Just got myself an 02 Boxster with 39,000 on the clock. This is a base Black on Black Tip with 18inch wheels , windstop. Paid $22800 in NJ.
Won't be putting much miles as this is a second car. Have owned 3 other Porsches in the last 20 years - 79 SC, 83 SC Cab, 88 C Cab.
This is my first watercooled, and liking it already. Nice tight handling, docile when you want it to be and has some horses when you need it.
I will be at the NY Tri-State run this weekend and looking forward to meet all attending.......

Boxster vs 911
Jeff,
I can tell you straight off, the two are very different animals from the perpective of handling. So far I love the way the Boxster handles in the turns, very sure footed. As for the 911's you need to work at it to get it right. No effort needed for the Boxster. Looking forward to track day.
My second observation would be how refined the Boxster as compared to my older 911s. The 911s had a raw nature about it which I still love and that very distinct engine whine when you going through the gears. The soundproofing in the boxster has taken some away.
Will give you more updates in a few months.

wow you got a GREAT deal on a barely 4 year old car. How'd you pull off that? That mileage isn't bad at all. Needs some 5 spoke Carreras and paint your calipers red. they have very well made replicas on Ebay for about $1000. Keep the stockers for DE/autocross.

i had a 99 boxster and a 2000 boxster s and a 95 993 and now a 87 911 coupe..i LOVED the boxsters but i can tell you that the 911s are that much better(imo)..the smell and noise and overall rawness is incredible in the 87..my 87 is as quick as the 00s was and faster from 60-90...when you learn how to drive them its a ball..if some of you guys are thinking about trying an old 911,you wont regret it..a/c is not great but works..much better in the boxster..these 911s are a great bargain now..as much as i loved the boxster, and truly loved it...i would never go back after the 911...i might take a boxster over the 996 though..j

Price
The car was listed for $26,000 and was sitting on the lot for almost 2 months and was about to go back on auction. Went in with a Bank Cheque for $22500 to show intent. Dealer was willing to go for $23,500. After much haggling it came down to $22,800.
I put on 4 new Bridgestone Pontenza for $920.Have issues with the service records. It shows service until 20k miles and a gap until 39K. I'm sure the previous owner did some servicing in that timeframe at an Indy maybe because Porsche Agent shows the gap. Cannot be sure what he had done,so taking it in for a full service check to see what it needs... oil, filters, belts , brake flush and whatever else.
The PPI did not turn up anything so should be good. For those of you looking to buy, do a PPI before you buy. Before this purchase, I had my money down for a 2000 full loaded with hardtop for $22,000. Took it in for a PPI and found that the car had bottom out at sometime during is life, with broken lower engine case cover, bent A/C pipes and had a RMS leak. Got out of that in a heartbeat. So spend the $150 for a PPI.

hey pl,its a tough one..i drove a new base boxster and loved it and thought hmmm...but the g-50 3.2s are really special..the boxster is a GREAT car,but it really isnt special..i will add a boxster one day,or maybe a lotus elise..you can buy a very good 3.2 for 17-20k i am sure you know this..its a tough call, but i will say having had both..the 3.2 wins hands down .if i can only have one,its the 911..i am able to put my 9 year old in the back,,its gaurds red with tail,fuchs..its a total classic and the smell and sound..its hand made..built MUCH better than the new cars..you can drive it for a few years sell it and then buy a newer boxster...but most importantly, what ever you do you will love either one..but maybe the 911 more likke i do..good luck,j

i Went with the Boxster because I can only have one car right now and
I'm a roadster guy at the end of the day. But I'm sure I'll own a nicely preserved
white g50 with red interior one day.
If was in your position and was looking for a "fun car" and the 911 checks out I'd go for one of those while they are still road worthy. THe Boxster is a another level of technology and engineering but not really a step up in the fun department, a bit too over engineered but still the best roadster experience going these days in my opinion. I agree, the values in a couple of years will make the Boxster an even greater value. It will always be there.
p.s.
also, coming from mid engine, I doubt I'll ever get used to 911 pendulus cornering.
Some guys like the satifsfaction of mastering it but I don't see this as a positive. I like to concetrate on the next corner and put the one in front of me out of my mind. But I wouldn't argue against the 911 being more entertaining and involved.
The G50 would be strictly for coolness factor (or maybe a 928), Boxster/CaymanS for Autocross/DE.
