There have been a lot of stories over the years.

The best, I think, has to do with the fact that display came from an Audi, and I forget the details of the rest of the story. Also note how "off" looks funny.

That is one of the stories. I have a German friend and when he came to California I showed him the display on my Boxster and asked him what the word meant. He thought it was the English word for manual. And we think it is the German word for manual.

I just assumed it was like "Druck" (Pressure) on the Oil pressure gauge in my 911.

It really IS the German word for "manual". As in, "done by hand". This can be verified in any german-english dictionary.

Manny lives in Stuttgart and used to hang out in the a/c controls dept at PAG.

He slipped that into the program long ago.

And, you might be correct, I just repeat what my German friend told me years ago.

He is, however, from and lives Bavaria, married to a woman from California. His wife did tell me the Bavarians speak a hillbilly German.

Then, I also asked him how to pronounce Porsche. Yet another subject. He said Poor-Shay. Must be that Bavarian accent.

After 7 plus years of Boxstir ownership I am going to try to get to the bottom of this.

I just asked the question on one of the German Boxster boards.

In the meantime, ponder OF f.

No worries... He may not have known the word. It is derived from Latin, and is rarely used apart from in a technical setting.

Regarding his "Porsche" pronunciation, that is definitely wrong. It should be something close to PORR-sha (stress on the first syllable, short "o").

Oh, yes, I am German and have spent the first 24 years of my life in Germany

Re: OFf

Well, I guess that's just because of the limitation of the LCD display that is used. There are two large LCD segments for the two-digit temperatures (used for the "OF" part), and a smaller segment used for the Celsius/Fahrenheit symbol (used for the "f" part). Not sure if this answers your question?

Cheers,
Gary

Gary got it.

I did ask on a German Boxster Boxster that I registered on over 3 years ago, and reposted the MANUELL picture. I took German 100 years ago in school and did not get a good grade. So they let me ask questions in English, and answer my questions in English and sometimes in German.

Four hours later: http://www.staunet.de/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3230

I don't know if you need to register to see the response, so here it is:

Hi Tool Pants,

very nice!
'Manuell' means 'manually operated'. You have switched off the automatic mode of the air condition.
Hope, that helps.

Best regards
Jens

Really?...and here I always thought it was Porsche speak that meant: "MAN, u keep playing with all these damn buttons in the car, and UELL for sure have to bring this car back to the stealership for us to charge u to fix it!"

And THIS is how you pronounce Porsche...
