Test drive tonight 2002 6speed Boxster
I am test driving a 2002 Boxster tonight. it has a 6 speed (rare?) non-S Gray ext/ black interior. asking 22,980 at a dealership.
no photos online yet but it states:
02 Boxster, 6 speed, 47k miles, like new 22,980.
I would be trading my 944 in if they make it worth my time. I am seeing lots of cars on ebay with "buy it now's " of 21-22k for similar cars. do I have any chance in heck of getting this car down to 20k? or is that way too low?
I am going to ask about RMS issue and also slipping sleeve (is that for this year?)
I am pumped!

There must be a typo in the ad, because the 6-speed was only avalible in the Boxster S prior to 2005 when it was an option ($$$) on the base model.
If the dealer isn't sure of the type of transmossion in the car I would have little faith that they would be able to identify a leaking RMS.
As for price, I'd check out ebays recent compleated sales for price reference points. At this time of year there are some great deals out there.

2002 w/ 60k mi, $20,000

1997 w/ 25K, $16,000

no 6 speed non s cars till 05 as stated so if it is a 6 speed non s its 1 0f 1
no sliped sleves on those and rms could leak on any year if its dry now dont worry about it.
price seems high to me unless they have every documented service record and its immaculate

Just for comparison's sake, I paid a bit more for my '01 with 29k miles, Porsche CPO warranty, and about every possible option one can have on a Boxster. (..well, without actually ordering the car..) If the car checks out, I don't think the price is out of range at all. Of course, it better be a good car. One thing about the Boxsters is, if they're crap, they show it.
..oh, and if it does have a six speed, it probably means the tranny was replaced for some reason. And while I've heard of clutch wear problems on Boxsters, I hate to think of how poorly a car was driven to require a whole transmission to be replaced!

I took the Vin to the Porsche dealer in town over lunch today and he ran the records on the car.
5-speed (I called the "high end" used car lot and the guy told me it was 6 speed and said he drove it??)
few options (no psm or Xenons)
car was a one owner lease in FL
1 yr ago fixed RMS
Ignition repair done
seatbelt repair done
no accidents reported
I will take some pics tonight. I will drive the car but I am going to do some more research before I buy. also the wife says I need to sell both 944's........

A few. Including the one I bought. But I'm referring more to the "one owner lease", "few options", "no accidents", and the two other fixes (seatbelt and ignition) are surprisingly common.

well the car I set out to look at was junk. Rear badge half broken off, front badge cracked. The interior looked like a raccoon went nuts in there. scratched up everything. The drivers seat was smashed flat and wide?! I am guessing a rather large person used the car. lots of wear on the bolster. I did not ever drive the car.
I then drove to another lot 20 miles away that had one. it was an 01, silver, boxster red. asking 24k with 32k miles. this car was loved. I drove it and it was very nice but I am looking for a black/seal gray car. The sound was awesome......my 944 is going to be on autotrader soon.

looking at completed auctions on ebay shows that the cars can be had for ~20k for an 02 with 50k miles or less. I am going to sell my 86 944 first then I will have some money to put down on the car. Thanks for all the replies.

Boxster pricing fluctuatest so much by region. I paid $30 for my 2000S with 10K miles two years ago.
I now have 30K miles on the car and I've seen pricing deviate as much as $8K for the same model, same miles, same options.
And I've added about another $5K in upgraded options (still have the original seats, wheels and headlights). Make sure you get a Boxster with 18" wheels if you want them, HID lights if you want them
and upgraded stereo if you want it. Unlike the rest of the aftermarket world it's very expensive to add these things later.
and if you anyone else is near PA try to get an autobroker who is familiar with the Manheim Auctions where Porsche lease returns are sold. Too many Boxsters for the dealers to absorb so they are sold at auction for deep discounts.
