engine failure -need help
My 97 boxter has no compression in #2. Porsche dealer says replacement engine is the only option he can offer- $8200, not including labor.
Questions:
1 Is there a place to buy reliable rebuilt engines other than Porsche?
2 I can get a replacement 2.5 engine for $3500. How do i really know if it has the miles the seller says - this is from a recycler company.
3 Should I attempt to have it repaired locally, Tucson AZ?
4 other ideas?
thanks for any help

not many ppl rebuild these motors.
contact local porsche race shops, they usually have 'SOURCE' to get new motors or slightly used one's. 8200 for a 2.5L is way too much $$$.
best of luck to you.

look at it as an opportunity to put in a 3.4l from a 996. You will still pay less than $8200 and get an additional 100 ponies. Look on ebay. I think I saw a 2.5 for sale a couple of days ago. Good Luck.

Here looks like a good one starting at $999 from a front end wreck.

Another from LA Porsche Dismantler, pretty huge place. Buy it now $1000... Can't really beat that.

How many miles on your car?
Something to consider, when you buy the reman motor you will be getting a motor with a 2 year warranty from Porsche, labor will probably be 1 year. When you see the motor everything has been replaced and upgraded to their current specs for that engine. All new wiring, hoses, internal seals, gaskets, ... a rebuilt will probably not have this done (rebuilts are rare and since many parts are not available from Porsche factory, parts to rebuild these are being taken form other scrapped motors, not a real comfortable feeling, and warranty?) Used motor, what is the history, can the mileage be verified? and warranty?
Look at your options carefully, deciding if you are willing to take a risk for lower $$, and if you are comfortable with that then go ahead. But if you are going to keep the car for a long while and want the security of a 2 year warranty, consider the reman motor. $8200 is a bit high for engine only. Porsche retail should be about $7200 and the dealer does not have much mark up from their cost.

When I had a new motor put in my '99, it ran me about $8700 total. I got some level of discount for being a PCA member at my dealership, but not as much as I'd hoped. I chose to go with the Porsche Reman motor for the warranty as noted above. Call it a bit of piece of mind.
However, if I were to do it over, I would probably do the 3.4 996 motor. At the time I was looking (a little over a year ago), it was going to run me the better part of $14k total. But I imagine it's been done enough that one could have it done for closer to $10k, depending on what you pay for the 996 motor. But man, to have 300hp in a Boxster....coooool!!!.

Oh, and FYI, I'd avoid LA Porsche Dismantler. I've heard just enough things on this board that would sway me from every doing any business with them. Never actually worked with them, just read a lot on the boards.

Firehawk, Let me clarify my post about the warranty. Yes, all Porsche factory parts have a 2 year warranty if bought through Porsche dealership, 2 year labor if installed by a dealership. But if you choose to have the motor installed by an independent, the warranty on labor may be different than at the dealership, 1 or 2 years.

Porsche will not warrenty anything installed by independet or owner (to my knowledge)
they spend millioons a year sending dealer techs to scholl to learn the vechicles.
theres no way they are gonna trust joes garage to install a 8000$ part in a 80000$ car
and then stand behind the install or the later diagnoseis of failure

I agree with Laura. My 2.5 blew at 54K. I had a extended warranty, thank God! Towed it to dealer and it was determined that this catastrophic failure would be warranted, but the warranty company would only replace with a used engine up to $6K. Service adviser said for $1800 more I should get the factory reman, all of the things Laura mentioned. I also had to have the flywheel, clutch and while they were at it.........60K service. In the end it cost me $3500 out of my pocket. Although it hurt, I'm glad I went this route. The engine is stronger, smoother, sounds much better and now runs like hell for a 2.5. I yearn for 50 additional hp to the rear wheels only to improve driveabiltiy and or additional grunt down low to improve pull out of corners. Otherwise, I can't imagine having 100 additional hp to improve straight line acceleration. It would be fun if your drag racing, but in my opinion....for $15K, it doesn't make sense. I have found improving the suspension, balance and more importantly my driving skills, to be of greater value. Just my HO. Ciao!
