Max miles on a Boxster
Well, I gotta go pick up our Boxster after a water pump failure. Gakkkk, $700. Only $200 for the pump, but 4 1/2 hours labor, gaskets, thermostat, antifreeze at $14 per liter, etc. Shouldn't complain too much, in 50k only a smog pump, $400 and an air bag light $100, plus the usual oil changes. And it's still not leaking oil, knock on wood.
Just curious, what is the max miles that anyone knows on a Boxster? Ours is a 98 with 94K.. The only 2 I know of with more than 130K had blown motors.

Here's a post from someone on Edmunds:
"My 98 Boxster has 200,000 miles on it and is providing my mechanic with first-time ever problems at the dealership. Currently we are working on an engine squeal that stops briefly only when travelling uphill or if I hit the accellerator. The mechanic has replaced the air conditioner compressor and, what do you know, the squeal's still there. Would appreciate any suggestions from Boxster owners with high mileage vehicles."

I have 158,000 miles on my 2000S. Original engine developed a crack at 119,000 miles. Replaced with a 2004 build new engine from Porsche (w/ 2 year unlimited mileage) warranty in Spring of 2005...

What does a new engine from Porsche cost? I realize that yours is an S and mine's not, I'm just looking for a ballpark. Does anyone else know?

New block is around $9-$10k I think.
My buddy has a 98 with over 130k on the clock - original engine
He's got the RMS leak recently - after having the clutch changed out
Not causing any major issues, so he lives with it.
He's had secondary air system issues that needed new air valves, honking when braking issue that needed a new horn plate, split coolant tank, and has a creaking suspension part that needs replacing.
So all the normal stuff!
Chris.

My tuner was able to get my new (built date was supposedly within the previous 6 months to my purchase) S engine from his contact at PCNA in Atlanta for approx $7,500. And yes, i had to give up my previous...
Hope that helps...best of luck.

I picked up the ole Boxster today. Took a while to scrounge the money. Interesting happening. My tech showed me the impeller had ground off to nothing. Now that's intresting to me. I watch the guages in a car like a hawk. 3000 + hours in helicopters, and 22 years of racing make me watch the guages. The car never got above the usual 190 it always runs. When I noticed the water leak, I backed it out of the parking space, saw the puddle and pulled it back in, shut it off, and it had just hit the 200 degree mark. It was roll-backed to the shop. That impeller must have ground off in the seconds before it started leaking, otherwise, I think, the temp would have gone sky high. It didn't.
My big thought, a $45,000 car with a plastic impeller on the water pump. How KIA'ahee. But on the other hand the pump did last 94,000 miles, which ain't bad.
Thoughts?????

I was just talking to a friend of mine this afternoon at the office(Cajun, usually on the 930 forum) about the engine failure issue and he said he has 150K on his and it's never seen the dealership for anything close to major!

I'll let you know
my 98 Boxster 2.5 has 82,000 miles now. And I'm looking forward to many more miles of driving pleasure.
However! as security, I have landed my DREAM JOB. As the Parts Manager of a Porsche Dealership. All I can say is I'll keep my eyes open and offer any info and help to all those high mileage Boxsters out there.

I find it interesting that 100K is considered a 'high-mileage' Boxter... 944s aren't really that high mileage until you're approaching 200k- it just seems incongruous that you're talking about the problems that you are under a relatively low mileage situation...
Then again, maybe I'm just completely out of touch with reality!

944's are also older. 944's have often gone through several owners. 200k in 20 year old cars is closer to average. I think that's the distinction here. Heck 200K mile aircooled 911's are "common" as well. Boxsters are still relatively new (the newest ones are still less than 10years old) and many were leased. As such, there would have been mileage restrictions for the first 2-4 years. Will there be 200-300K mile boxsters? I hope so!
