Default Boxster pricing question

my brother is with a friend of a friend with a 01 boxster not a S but has sport package.

45k miles silver black hard wired radar detector, dealer maintained. He started to describe it to me, suffice it to say he thinks it is very clean. I see things most people dont, so lets leave it as clean, garaged, maintained. recent continentals and brakes.

$21k. Is it a good deal? great deal? it is not for me.

is 01 after the motor sleeve problems?

Thanks

'99s built between (I think) 10/98 and 3/99 are the motor sleeve problems. '01 is clear of those by a long shot. Add to that the 2.7, while only a little bit more powerful on paper, is said to be a noticably better motor than the 2.5 in power and usability. '01 will have better interiors than previous years. I'd say this is a good deal. Not great. But that's a lot of car for $21k.

I don't mean to put down the car. I'm sure it's a great car. I just wanted to point out that the "sports package" which you mention in the same breath as an "S" is not a performance package. It's just what they call a certain type of trim package. I think you can find the exact description on ppbb.com. Again, it doesn't mean it's bad in any way.

Thanks. I told my brother to ask the seller (orignal owner) to fax him the window sticker. I think my brother believes it has some "S" parts as options on it.

I called the dealer, he had the 15 and 45 done there, no 30 and no brakes but the tires and brakes are relatively new.

He may have used a different dealer for those.

The car is silver/black. My brother commented to me "what kind of an idiot buys a convertible with a black interior, and silver isnt my first choice". with that comment I told him the price better be a really great deal or he should wait for his "dream" car at full retail.

I have an O1S and you wont get it for 21K. Depending on the part of the country and summer upon us look at between 35 too 45. If its clean sounds like a steal to me.

P69 Sport Design Package
Info

The P69 "Sport Design" includes:

Leather sport seats (P77), black partial leather only (Code AZ).
Black Leather: Hand brake grip, Door handles, shift lever ****, Airbag cover, Rollbar trim, Cover of center console, Upper part of instrument cover.
Textured black leatherette: Side pads of center console front, dashboard, door panels, side panels of center console.
Painted Metal Grey: Bottom of instrument bridge, Instrument rims, Switch Plates, Seat buckets, switch plates on seats, outer seat fittings, center console, Handbrake cover, handbrake lever, ashtray cover plate and lid, door handle tube left and right, panel in front of door lever, storage compartment lid, roll bar, gear shift **** insert (in case of Tip: release ****).
3-spoke leather steering wheel, black, with airbag. The only way to get the 3 spoke wheel in the U.S. (at this time) is with the P69 Option.
1998 model price is $1620.00.
Conflicts: It has been verified that the P69 does not conflict with the P63 option package.

Here is one person’s description of the gray color of the P69:

The trim pieces are gray, not silver. In person, they look to have a granite type quality (gray, black, white, silver "chunks" all mixed together, gray predominating), Not only do the trim pieces have a granite look, they have a rough texture. These pieces are not smooth or glossy. The top of the cluster, top of the lockable console, door handles, and passenger airbag are leather, black (only) the seats are black leather (only) but being "sport seats" are backed in that same gray granite plastic all the rest (that would normally be vinyl) are "diamond textured" black vinyl. The diamond pattern captures and reflects light and is palpable (i.e. you can feel the pattern) here comes the opinion part: stunning. It is definitely a bargain for the price (in just hardware alone).

Here are the part numbers for the various components of the P69 Package:

Instrument Cluster
986.641.104.04 (European)
986.614.105.04 (Tiptronic)
Door Compartment Flap
986.555.591.01 (left door)
986.555.591.02 (right door)
Mid Console and Brake Handle
996.552.125.02.C02
996.424.155.01.C02
Gear Shift
986.424.075.03.EKP
A/C, Radio, and PCM Components
986.552.241.02.C02
PCM Version
986.552.131.03.ENF

Thanks Jay,
I asked my brother if it had a the roll hoops and he didnt think so. With just the basic sport package I dont think it is worth jumping on since it isnt his first choice of color, etc.

He got the window sticker. it is just a sport, not a sport touring.

he found one at a dealer, a year newer with full leather and stability mgmt for 30k with i think he said 30K miles.

which is a "better" deal? right now he is walking into a porsche dealer to get the sales pitch from a pro.

$30k for an '02 with 30k miles? That sounds like a dealer's upcharge alright. The better deal? ..easily the '01. But if the '02 is more what he wants, as long as it's a CPO Porsche with warranty, it might be worth it to him to pay a little more for the car from the dealership.

i told him to try and talk the 21k down a bit. he is all over the place looking at a 03 for 35 from a porsche dealer, 30k for the 02 from a used car dealer in PA. I wonder what he will be able to get in two years for the 01 with 75k and just the sport package. FWIW it stickered at 47 in 01.

I would suggest that the difference between what he'll pay ($21k) vs. what he'll get (probably high 'teens if not better) will be far less than the difference of what he'll pay at a dealership and what he'll get when he sells any of them with another 50k miles on them. There's little difference between the '01 and '02 models (in fact, I think no difference). The '03 models have the glass rear window and the face lift, so that might hold it's value a little better. But mechanically or in terms of "reliability", all of these cars are much the same. None will give significantly more enjoyment than another. So paying more now just means losing more later.

Just my $.02.

here is the link to the red one it has 15k less miles plus the sport touring, full leather and PSM. but is $9k more and no record of being serviced by porsche.
http://www.carstoreofglenside.com/detail.cfm?ID=159690

how much more will this be worth in 2 years if he puts 30k on this one? I think it would be close to a wash, but the red will be a tougher sell.

We cant decode 232 and 502 option codes.

the red has 983, 981, 692, 680, 659, 551, 535, 476, 454, 446, 391, 340, 139, X99
