RMS frequency 2.7 vs 3.2
As I begin my search for a Boxster, I was wondering if RMS failure is more common in the 2.7 or 3.2 engines. I see many threads discussing RMS, but I wasn't sure which power plant seems more prone to failure. Ideally I will be looking for a 2002 S. I will insist on a PPI before finalizing any purchase. Thanks for your help.

RMS leaks have been reported on 2.5s,2.7s,3.2s, 3.4s and yes even 3.6s.
It is an M96 engine line issue not a particular engine size size. It is not a fatal flaw. You can live with it.It just leaves a piddle on the garage floor. if not under warranty, i would NOT fix one.
Slipped sleeves are found on a run of '99 2.5s, and most all porosity issues were '97, '98 2.5s.
Oh Yes, It is a BOXSTER...note the SSS.

Thank you Dennis. I apologize for my spelling of Boxster. It won't happen again. One last question, I noticed in ads that Porsche Certified vehicles carry a 6 year/100,000 mile warranty. Does the 6 years start from the original in-service date or the date the certified vehicle is sold? Thanks again

..I hope it's your purchase date. It is interesing that you cannot buy an extended warranty from Porsche for a car you purchased new, as with my '04 S...but if I bought a used '04 now with CPO I could get up to 100K coverage.

Yep, it's 6 years from the In Service Date OR 2 years from the purchase date on cars where the factory warranty has expired. Here's the exact verbage from the Porsche site:
Every Porsche Approved vehicle comes with a comprehensive Warranty
- If sold while under the new car warranty, Coverage is up to 6 years or 100,000m/160,000km total , whichever comes first
- If sold once the new vehicle warranty has expired, Coverage is 2 years from the date of sale or up to 100,000m/160,000km, whichever comes first

I was speaking to a service mechanic at a local Porsche dealer. He told me that it has actually been a pretty rare occurance, that the 3.2 had it less than others, but that the worst one was actually a 996! I forget what year 996 he said. I concur on the lack of fatal issue here.
I should add that I told him I was surprised because I heard it happened on Boxsters not 996s because of some location where the crank had less support as part of the mid engine design. He said without a doubt that it was the 996 RMS from a certain year that had the worst leaks - but even those were not on a large scale.

My thanks to all. This forum is great!!! I've learned so much about Boxsters. Through my reading, it appears the 2003 has several advantages over the 2002 model, i.e. new cab top, glass in cab top, nicer interior and yes, cup holders. So now my sights are on a 2003 S and probably a cab. Thanks again to all.
