Default Cruise Control Won't work...Help.

Hi guys.

The cruise control wouldn't work when I removed my 1997 boxter from storage. The dealer said it isn't uncommon, but they can't quote the repair. I plan to try to fix it myself. Any common problems you guys know of?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Ignorance runs rampant in the good ole US of A. Especially when it comes to cars.

I guess it could be many things, but in my case it was caused by a defective brake-light switch. The switch is just above the brake pedal. It has two actions - one to turn on the brake light, and one to disable the cruise control when you touch the brake pedal.

Good luck.

Switch seems to be working fine. I did remove the seats about the same time. I hope there isn't a computer attached to the bottom of the seat that will screw it up.

I also checked the fuse as well. Good.

Further help appreciated.

Check and see if the bulb comes on in the instrument cluster when you first turn on the ignition. It should come on along with all the rest of the lights in the instrument cluster. If its not then you'll need to remove the cluster and replace the bulb.

There is no bulb when ignition is turned on. Are you saying that the cruise simply might not work due to a burned out bulb? I have never heard of something like this. It just never engages.

So will a bad bulb actually keep the unit for operating?

Yes a burnt out bulb will prevent the cruise from working. It completes part of a circuit required for cruise to work. Before you start replacing more expensive parts it would be worth it to remove the cluster and see if the bulb is burnt out. IIRC, bulbs are around 10 bucks from your dealer.

Other possible causes are the brake switch and of course the unit itself which is located under the dash right above the gas pedal. These are rare though, in my experience the most common cause is the bulb.
