Default Buying a Boxter

As a 911 owner, I'm looking at a Boxter for my mom. The vehicle in question is a 97 model. The car has 37000 miles on the odometer. The original color is red and the car has been repainted black. The paint is not up to factory standards. I've also noticed that both doors don't close flush with the rear fenders, is this normal? We know the car has been wrecked and have seen the pictures. It seems to be a minor sideswipe. There is a new top as well. The owner has told me that the car has a salvage title. This car is tempting because of the close proximity to my home (Wilmington, NC), and the low mileage. I know there are plenty of these cars around so I can be choosy. The owner has told me that $18000 will take the car.

Is this car even worth considering?
What is the car worth?
Will I be able to resell in 5 years at close to market value?

Thanks for your help.

run away, if the car was completely normal, it would be worth 13-15k, with the repaint it is worth nothing

if you buy it you are making a huge mistake

you would have a hard time selling it again. take your own advice and be choosey.

especially with a complete repaint, i cannot emphasize this enough, RUN.

market education:
you can get a perfectly cared for, kosher example of a 97' boxster with 50k miles ~ for $15k~.

PS: try ppbb.com for a great boxster community, someone there may be willing to sell, since the 987 is coming and many are making a switch

good thing you thought to ask before jumping into it, i just saved you from a HUGE mistake.

Run away, IMO the car is worth less than $10K.

its worth NOTHING, i wouldnt take it if you paid me.

because with a car like that, who knows what else is wrong, you can't simply deduct a few extra grand off the asking, i mean its been in a serious accident and completely repainted.

Run far away. You can take your pick of 1997 Boxsters for $18k. It's spelled Boxster by the way.

First, learn to spell it, it's BOXSTER.

Second, run away from the deal as fast as you can!

My "old" '87 944S has original paint and no accident history and these were important factors in my decision to buy. If you buy this car (which I agree sounds overpriced) it will be much more difficult to sell with its issues. Every Boxster I've seen has nice, flush fitting of the doors. The accident probably did more damage than the pictures suggest. It is hard to really judge the extent of damage from photos (assuming the photos are actually of the same car).

My vote is with the rest...Leave it!

Thanks and best of luck in your search. A little time will find you a much better sample.
