I have read some threads and some magazines stating that some of the early Boxsters and some later ones too have suffered some mechanical failures such as sleeves slipping inside the cylinder and bearing issues. Are there any other issues related to serious mechanical failures that I am missing here? Has anyone off this board suffered a severe mechanical failure on their Boxster and had it replaced by Porsche, warrantied or not?

Other than the few mishaps I've heard and read, I believe the Boxster series is one of the most reliable Porsches as long as they are maintained at the correct intervals.

'99 had a RMS replaced at 10K. Wrecked this car at Pocono at 29K....replaced with '02
"02 had an intermediate shaft failure at 6K and engine was replaced under warrantee....Dealer wrecked car at 30K.

Now have a 550 SE..with 7k .

Water pump at 47k and alternator at 53K.

RMS and oil filler tube leak at 9k with previous owner.

wow other than RMS failures and few engine issues, it seems like the rest is normal wear and tear maintenance. Keep 'em coming

On my 01, the right rear wheel bearing and the climate control panel have been replaced under warranty.

My 99 boxster had catastrophic sudden engine failure at 14,800 miles. The car was out of warranty. Porsche North America would not help me at all. It cost me $ 9000 to put a another engine in it. This is the most unreliable car I've ever had. I am very disappointed in Porsche.

01 Boxster S - RMS at 10K, right rear wheel bearing at 50K, Complete Engine failure and warenty replacement at 55K.

i really want to buy an S, but what is up with all these early engine failures and RMS problems?
is this a quality of build issue? not much piece of mind in an out-of-warranty car.

i hate to say it, but my lowly 44 is running hard at 183k on original engine and tranny. I haven't driven a boxster yet, but man, it better be so incredible as to obscure any reservations I have about the mechanical reliability and company attitiude of the time.

2) Ruptured oil fill tube

3) Top sensor failure

4) Coolant hose rupture

5) Broken radio bracket

'99 with 27,7xx miles. Owned since March '03. Two oil changes. New tires right after purchase. Set for 30k service next month. I drive it all year 'round with winter tires and (new this year) a hardtop.

Only had one electrical issue. The airbag warning light came one...changed out seatbelt catch with faulty sensor. This was done under warranty.

No RMS issues. (..knock on wood..)

No (apparant) oil consumption.

Best car I've ever owned! (..again, knock on wood..)

'O2 S:
1. wind screen latch broke. Replaced enitre screen & assembly under warranty.
2. 2 key failures. Replaced under warranty. The second time just happened on Sunday.
3. right inside door storage flap material was scaling off. Replaced under warranty.
4. tires.

Going in for 15k mi service next month & have some things I will discuss with service manager & report back the results.
