Boxster Odometer Problem

Boxster Odometer Problem
I recently changed the battery in my '99 Boxster. After the gauges synched back up the odometer showed 999,999 (it was in kilometers). I switched it back to miles and now it shows 599,999. Everything else is fine. When I drive the trip odometer is fine but the odometer never moves.
I tried unhooking the battery and hooking it back up hoping things would synch but its still the same problem. I talked to a local porsche mechanic who had no idea what would cause this problem. I also talked to the dealer who said the same thing but would be more than happy to take a look at it for me.
Has anyone ever seen this or know what could cause it?

At our work on cars days over the years we have disconnect the batteries in many cars and this has never happened. But once in a while on the message boards I see reports such as yours.
Try this. Disconnect the negative cable with the key in the ignition. Turn key to position 1 and then turn key to off position. Then hook up negative cable.

You may not have left the key in the #1 position long enough. Unless you think you did try it again and this time leave it in the #1 position longer, and press the brake pedal and hold the pedal for a moment.
You want to fully bleed away any power that is allowing the instrument cluster controller to remember the wrong valve.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I thought it would be a good idea to bring this thread back to life and share my experience.
This just happened to me after I picked up my car from the mechanic who had been working on the brake switch, after a while I discovered that the radio, trip meter and speedometer have been completely reset to Km and it showed 999,999, I tried taking it back but they were closed for the weekend and the things I was reading on line were not to hopeful until I found this thread and IT WORKED.

99 Boxster - worked perfectly for me
(As long as I turned to position 1 not 2 😏
Even went back to original mileage 44100 - I was afraid it was lost.
Lots of maintenance recently, not sure what caused it but wonderful to see it fixed. Thanks!!
PS: also fixed metric gauge displays as well

I just attempted this fix on a 1999 Boxster with the the odometer showing 99999, and it corrected the odometer! 👏👏👏
