VERY cool!

I was actually wondering a few days ago what a 996 would be like with an Audi 2.7L turbo engine from the circa 2000 S4.

Would love to know the details of this swap. I assume this is the easiest swap on earlier Boxsters?

I think that engine would be way too big, it hardly even fit the b5.

I'd love to drive a boxster like this but with a gt28rs turbo! All of the power! That would be an easy 350hp wheel.

If anyone wants any more details on any certain part of the job, let me know. I still have the complete original engine, ecm, wire harness, left side cat, muffler from the Boxster, if someone needs something, let me know that too.

The 2.7tt swap has been done. However the 1.8t is a much better choice for so many reasons. Truly love seeing the 1.8t being swapped in. This is coming from someone who doesn’t like engine swaps.

Andrew-
I have a 996 c2 6spd with no motor or core

would this mod get it out of the storage container? Been sitting in there for a decade

approx cost?

It sure would. What would make it even better is if it were a 99 c2 so you could swap in an AEB cable driven 1.8t as they have a large port head over the AWM. Cost is going to come into play of how much you can do yourself.

The 996 transmission will not allow the 1.8t engine to just bolt up to it directly like the Boxster does. I'm sure an adapter plate and custom flywheel could be made, or perhaps it already exists. I'm not sure how well this inline 4 would fit under the lid in place of the flat 6, the boxster with its mid-engine has all the height it needs but just barely.

Andrew - this seems an awesome swap - what year models 1.8T are best fits? Will the 2.0T in the newer vehicles fit as well? Thanks much for the write up and info.

Any of the 1.8t engines will work. The early AEB like I used is the only one 1.8t with a drive by cable throttle rather than drive-by-wire so that let me just adapt the cable to my throttle body rather than install and electric gas pedal and wire it up. The early ones also have no immobilizer to deal with. The later 2.0t will bolt up to the transmission but in my opinion is not as good of an engine (I have a VW/Audi shop and work on these things every day). The 1.8t is really reliable pretty simple engine that can be made to make lots of HP and be run hard every day for years.

Thanks Andrew - the 1.8 seems really easy as you mentioned - but just for my edumacation - will the 2.0's direct injection transverse bolt up to the boxster trans, or does in require the engine from a longitudinal car? EG will a Mk 6 GTI engine bolt up?

Thx!

The 5 speed Boxster transmission will bolt up to most (all?) any of the VW/Audi inline 4cy, V6, or V8 engines.

Cool thread. I've always wondered about other engines if the 2.5 went boom.

To tie it all in with the Boxster electronics, it was actually pretty easy. I ran the K-line from my ECM to the OBD plug so it can be scanned just like the stock engine. The ABS and cruise control were happy once I got the tach functioning properly, I had to use a MSD 8920 tach signal converter to let my ECM talk to a Dakota Digital SGI-8 tach interface to alter the output from my 4cy to make the 6cyl tach show proper engine speed. The stock Box temp gauge works fine with the 1.8t temp sensor. The alternator light also works fine with the VW alternator. It's just a matter of looking at the wire diagrams from this engine and that of the Boxster to determine what wires go where, a time consuming job but not terribly hard, I enjoy it. The 1.8t ECM in this car has a tune from APR that brings the HP to about 200, the stock 2.5 was 209hp I believe, this engine is about 160 lbs lighter, there is something that a turbo adds to the feel of a car that I just love.
I just use a stock Passat Flywheel and clutch and starter and then was able to just bolt the engine to the transmission, The Boxster only has one motor mount, I just fabricated an adapter piece that would allow my engine to bolt up to the stock Box mount once I had the engine in position. The exhaust uses the stock right Catalytic converter from the Boxster, I fabbed up a pipe to connect the turbo to the inlet side and just used a small resonator and tail pipe on the outlet side of it. The stock 1.8t oxygen sensors bolted right into the threaded bungs on the Boxster cat.
I did not yet connect the AC compressor from this engine to the car, here in the Northeast we can get away without AC, I prefer to just drop the top.

Andrew-

here's a 1.8t I put in a customer's 2wd Vanagon...

here's a 1.8t in my Syncro Vanagon, this one I modified the engine so it runs counterclockwise so it allows me to run the entire drivetrain from a Audi A4 Quattro. You can also see from comparing this and the Boxster job with the on shown above that my work is much neater when I'm doing it for someone else!
Where is your shop located? I'm interested on doing that swap please send me some info pelosepulveda@gmail.com

I'm located in East Nassau NY, it's about 20 miles East of Albany. I am not interested in doing these as a job for customers, but I'm happy to share any information on what it takes to do it.
