Summary:

Alan Pozner: "285s fit on the front of 987s (and 997s) just fine in stock form."

John Vitamvas: "Dave Hedderick had 285s on the front of his dad's 986S at the 2008 Nationals."

internet tough guy (not sure real name?): "Rad had 285s all around on his '08 Cayman S in AS that won AS this year at Nats. I've been running 275F 285R most of this year but will be going to 285F for next year. They actually fit better than the 275s "
Yeah, I saw a long post from Rad one time about all the little tricks to get a 285 to fit and be legal in SCCA. But, really, I don't think 285s are realistic in SCCA STU. My initial numbers are showing that many of these cars I've mentioned are a stretch on 265s square. Cretinx has stated that a 996 can only get 255s in front. This is why the lowest credible weight for U.S. cars is so important to determine. I mean to say, I need the lowest weight for a low-option "99 996 for instance, and a '04 996. I'm thinking that the real number is about 3000 lbs for the '99 (which had a curb weight of 2901) and 3100 for the '04, but I can't prove it. SPEEDEMON weighed his well-optioned '99 at 3113 lbs.

Be careful here, you are quoting Hoosier/Kumho sizes pinched on the OEM rim widths. When you spread those out to wheel widths in ST, you might find you can't quite go as large in the front.

The sidewall on the RE71r is as stiff as any R-comp I've ever felt.

Because that's relevant to what I said? It's not but it is a stiffer sidewalled tire yes.

Real data point for 987/997 front fitment. In stock form, with stock limited camber, stock offsets +-6mm, 285's will stick out of the fenders, but will work because the ride height is so tall, and the tires never get close to contacting anything even under compression.

With ST/SP mods, the limit to fitment is a non issue. Use camber plates to pull in the strut tops, and 285s will tuck in the fenders at low ride heights. Your limit is inboard strut/spring clearance.

You can fit 285s in ST. Ran 285s in front of the 996 GT2 years ago on 10" wheels. CCW has the dimensions I used.

Think I was running about 3 degrees negative camber, and I never had any rubbing in the front, and did not need to roll the fenders, etc. (I was running in ASP, so I could have).

I don't know if people are still looking for this, but my 40th was 3180 or so. It could be lighter with manual seats instead of comfort, and no rear wiper or nav.
